I now feel mortal as I’ve watch all the available ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes and now have to wait with the rest of the world for the next season. Gosh dang it, that’s a good show and I totally get why there’s so much buzz about it – great acting, great story lines, and surprises galore.
I usually like to refer to Gov. Rick Perry as Gov Good Hair (mostly in jest and coifed jealousy), but I think he won the public perception battle yesterday by releasing that letter he wrote to the White House two years ago warning of this problem (then again, you can only guard the border so well with sequestration and other stuff). He’s really making himself look good for an upcoming presidential run.
When Gov. Perry rode with the president on board Marine One I wonder how much he thought about actually being president, that he should have been in this position two years ago. CBS11 had footage of Perry and Obama boarding Marine One and Perry saluted the marines, which seemed out of place but I guess I’ll take that as a sign of respect. However, when he was getting off Marine One he patte one of the saluting marines on the shoulder which seemed very out of place.
I guess this was the closest I’ve been to a sitting president since he was about a ten minute drive from my house.
When the president comes to Dallas I wonder if DPD starts off meetings with “we aren’t going to have another JFK moment in this city.”
The Republicans have done a good job of making President Obama look uncaring about not wanting to visit the border, but I’m not sure what good a trip to the border will do. There’s been some comparison to him not visiting the border to President G.W. Bush only taking an aerial view of the Katrina damage in New Orleans. I never faulted Bush for that action, he was right that his presence on the ground would interfere with relief efforts, and I think the comparison is a bit apples and oranges.
I always felt President Obama did a poor job of explaining things, but he did an excellent job explaining things at the press conference after his meeting with Gov Perry and other officials.
Speaking of border related things, season two of ‘The Bridge’ aired last night and opened with a lot of blood. The biggest surprise when it came to the cast was seeing Brian Buaumgartner, better known as fat bald guy Kevin from ‘The Office’. It wasn’t in the credits, but I swear he played two very different characters.
I remember when George W. Bush was in his second term with horrible approval numbers and I would ponder who were the people actually giving him favorable ratings. Well, let’s just say I now understand how those folks felt and can totally relate. Despite both men slowly reacting to things and making questionable decisions, I suppose we both just feel comfortable with overall policy and that we trust their overall judgement, even if it’s not popular.
Mitt Romney flew coach the other day. Even though his wife says that was their last campaign ever, part of me wonders if this was a savvy political move to make him seem toned down and related to the average American for an upcoming run. I actually think he’d beat Hillary, there seems to be a bit of buyer’s remorse from the voting public.
Some owners of Woot.com sold out to Amazon and miss the good old days of just selling one item a day, so now they’ve opened Meh.com. Per this article the former Woot owner had a bad experience with Jeff Bezos. D Magazine had a blurb about it so I’m guessing it is also a local company.
The Dallas Morning News is shutting down its paid website. They say it’s a nine month experiment that didn’t work. I visited their website right around 10:00 PM thinking the feature story would be Obama and Perry meeting. Nope, it was a review of the restaurant San Salvaje.
"He’s really making himself look good for an upcoming presidential run."
He's going to have to try harder than that. All of the people for whom this is an issue are going to vote Republican anyway. The Democrats will vote for whomever wins the Democratic nomination. The moderates know that despite Perry banging the war drums for years, Obama has deported more people, faster, than even Bush did and the last person to give wholesale amnesty to immigrants was Reagan, so the complaining is just a scare tactic that educated moderates see past and will not be swayed by.
Keep trying Perry. Maybe this time you won't be on pain meds during the debates and you can remember all three government agencies you say should be disbanded.
Rick Perry has an albatross around his neck and it's name is "Oops". Worst. soundbite. ever. He has more to overcome in the primaries than in a general election. 12 years of being basically uncontested have given him delusions of grandeur.
The most cynical side of me wonders if this whole border issue is not being addressed for humanitarian or even fiscal reasons but instead as the R's and D's looking at it as a "future voters issue". Dems want more Hispanic voters and Repubs want to curb them. And that thought is the saddest of all, because there's no real debate or compromise possible when both sides are only invested in the political aspect of the problem.
I just don't know if we'll ever see a president who can cross the aisle in terms of popularity again. I was pretty disappointed in my party with some of the horrendous vilification of Bush, and then with Obama it literally started before he even took office. I'm pretty disgusted with America right now.

I've never watched an episode of Game of Thrones.
Great article on Dave.
