Halloween Pictures from Work

My first Halloween at Southwest was a very memorable one.  You can view the pictures below, I tried to get a variety of costumes I saw and from the performances as well.  Some of the pictures are a bit blurry, but I think they will give you idea of the overall event.

Some of the costumes that caught my attention were  Magnum P.I., 80’s John McEnroe, Clark Kent wearing a suit with an open shirt revealing a Superman logo, Richard Simmons, and Underdog.  I saw a couple dressed as Raggity Ann and Andy and I told WifeGeeding there’s no way in H.E. double hockey sticks we’ll ever be doing that.  There was also a brother and sister that cracked me up, he was a Dallas Cowboys football player and she was a Washington Redskins cheerleader.  The two most common costumes . . . Joe the Plumber and The Joker from Batman.

One of the big things to look for on Halloween is to see what our CEO is dressed as.  He’s dressed pretty impressively over the years, but this year he was part of a ZZ Top trio, and DallasNews has a small video of it here.  WifeGeeding and I were actually lucky enough to sit directly behind him for the first performance, and funny enough, the Executive Director who was also part of the ZZ Top crew reached out to WifeGeeding.  It turns out the Executive Director had a child in one of WifeGeeding’s classes a few years back.

Oh, what did we decide to dress up as?  Barney and Betty Rubble.

Local U2 Church Event

THE GOSPEL
ACCORDING TO U2
Sunday, November 9
5:00pm – 7:00pm

Though the four members of U2 comprise a mainstream, secular rock group, they are arguably the most influential Christian musicians in the world.

Join us as we explore the music and theology of one of the world’s biggest bands.  Themes of social justice, spiritual longing, redemption and grace are a big part of that theology and will be a focus of this program.

We will also celebrate the U2charist–Holy Communion using the songs of U2. Bring a friend to this evening of great music, theology, and fellowship!

Pronto Vaticano – Working the Vatican switchboard

It appears when one calls the Vatican you don’t get the “Press 1 for . . .” option.  Instead you get an actual human.

It’s a pretty interesting article, these pieces stood out:

  • “People ask us: ‘So you really work on Christmas? You work on Easter?’ ” she said. “Of course we do. The church is a mystic body. I feel that we are the heart of the church. And the heart never stops.”
  • At least once a day, someone insists on speaking, urgently and directly, with Pope Benedict XVI himself. The sisters respond with tact and prudence. They never say an outright “No.”
  • The sisters work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. They recognize and tolerate certain regulars. One frequent caller identifies himself as Saint John the Baptist. He’s harmless, though he gets touchy if they don’t address him as “Saint John.”

  • Instead of making election day a holiday so people can get out to vote, maybe it should be moved to a Saturday.
  • I drink a lot of tea and that has given me stained teeth, so I bought a pack of Listerine Whitening Quick Dissolving Strip.  They work much better and faster than expected.  I have to admit when I opened the first strip pack, I couldn’t even find the strip because they are small, clear, and stick to the side of the packet – I thought I got gypped.  What I like about the strips is that as they dissolve they get inbetween the my teeth where I have a lot of staining.
  • When I was a teenager (early 90’s) the church I attended had a “Slave Auction.”  That’s what it was called and marketed as, seriously.  It was an opportunity for the youth to raise funds for summer activities.  It worked like this, a youth stood on the alter and people bid for his or her services to do chores and errands.  When my father found out I participated in such a thing he was irate, and was further disappointed that a church would be so racially insensitive, even though they had the best intentions.  The following year the event still occurred but the event name was changed to “Youth Auction.”  In case you were wondering how racially diverse the church was, from my memory all the adults where white, there was a few Hispanic children and one Black adopted kid.  Oh, and me.  Please know the people of the church were very loving, but in this case they didn’t fully think things through.

Transplanted cornea in use for record 123 years

OSLO (Reuters Life!) – Bernt Aune’s transplanted cornea has been in use for a record 123 years — since before the Eiffel Tower was built.

“This is the oldest eye in Norway — I don’t know if it’s the oldest in the world,” Aune, an 80-year-old Norwegian and former ambulance driver, told Reuters by telephone on Thursday. “But my vision’s not great any longer.”

He had a cornea transplanted into his right eye in 1958 from the body of an elderly man who was born in June 1885. The operation was carried out at Namsos Hospital, mid-Norway.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the oldest living organ in the world,” eye doctor Hasan Hasanain at Namsos hospital told the Norwegian daily Verdens Gang.

In the 1950s, doctors expected it to work for just five years, Hasanain said. Such cornea operations date back to the early 20th century and were among the first successful transplants.

  • Yup, this is all you get today.  Southwest threw a Texas size party and I was one of about 10,000 partying the night away.
  • SisterGeeding was riding in a cab in NYC when a woman talking on her cell phone (and not on a hands free device per NY law) did a hit an run.  Of course that lady happened to be driving an Acura.  Thankfully, SisterGeeding is OK.

  • Peter King mentioned in his MMQB column that he will have a story in this week’s Sports Illustrated about what Wade Phillips did to jazz up the Dallas D. Could be worth reading, I just hope it’s also available online. Phillips won’t admit it, but defensive coordinator Brian Stewart’s defensive calling days are over, this is, if Phillips wants to keep his job.
  • Speaking of Peter King, this is the second time in a year he’s mentioned the Coppell Deli that’s about a mile from my house. Since he’s my favorite sports writer (sorry Bill Simmons, you lost me with all your damn Boston talk) I think it would be cool to run into him one day at this place. Only problem is, I never eat there because I think it’s a little over-rated. For his reference to the Coppell Deli, see the “Enjoyable/Aggrivating Travel Note of the Week” section here.  Later today he’s going to have an article about the new stadium.
  • I don’t live in Coppell, I live a stone throw from it in Lewisville and Denton County with the cheaper taxes. It’s the Coppell lifestyle with a Lewisville address and much more cheaper.
  • I did give some out-of-towners directions to get to the Coppell Deli once. They flew in from California and were on their way to their first ever Cowboy game and wanted to eat at this ‘legendary’ place. Glad I could help out.

There’s one thing about those commercials that causes me to pause . . . they are all in black and white and he’s always wearing a black cowboy hat. [YouTube] In black and white westerns, didn’t the bad guy always wear the black hat?  At least it’s better than his Big John commercials.
  • Newspaper political endorsements always make stop and think. I always thought the news was supporse to be unbiased, and I wonder who makes the decision to speak for the entire publication and wonder if that causes any animosity within the organization. Locally, I think it’s interesting that the Dallas Morning News has endorsed McCain and the Fort Worth Star Telegram endorsed Obama. If anything, I would have thunk it to be the other way around regarding their demographics.
  • I had a very homophobic friend that I worked with on the paint crew in college. On one hot sunny day we were told to paint a pipe fence off campus near the horse stables. I decided to take my shirt off (no need to cue the Brokeback music) not only too cool off, but I didn’t want any funky tan lines and he decided to follow. Of course the sun got the best of us and we got burnt really bad on our backs, but I decided to apply lotion several times daily for the next couple of days to help me heal – I was pretty limber back in those days and could apply lotion to all of my back all by myself. After a few days he saw me at lunch and asked if I was itchy from the sun burn and dead skin because it’s been driving him crazy. I told him about the lotion and he made some girly man comment. Later that evening I was in my dorm room all by myself watching TV when he comes rushing through the door with a bottle of lotion in hand, turns around and locks the door profusely and says, “I need you to rub lotion on my back. I’m dying here, I can’t take the itching any longer. I’m at your mercy. Please don’t tell anyone about this.”
  • There’s a young white couple I know that are adopting a baby from Vietnam. This will be their first child. It’s not that they can’t have children, it’s just they feel called to adopt a child from Vietnam at this very point in time. you can read about there decision here. There’s been a lot of road blocks along the way, but somehow they have overcame them all and are in the process of raising money for the trip over there. To raise said funds, they are selling a pretty groovy t-shirt that my Vietnamese born and adopted sister totally adores. I know I have several readers that have some Vietnamese church ties, and this shirt would make a very nice gift, perhaps for Christmas. The shirts are $20 and bought here.

Survey: Most Americans Believe God Uniquely Blessed U.S.

WASHINGTON – Most Americans strongly believe that God has uniquely blessed America, and a similar majority believe that the United States should set the example as a Christian nation to the rest of the world, a survey released Wednesday found.

Sixty-one percent agree that America is a nation specially blessed by God, and 59 percent believe the United States should be a model Christian nation to the world, according to a poll conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research Inc. for the PBS news program Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and the United Nations Foundation.

Support for the idea that America is uniquely blessed by God was highest among people who attend religious services weekly (80 percent), with 86 percent of evangelical Christians sharing this belief. In comparison, less than half (48 percent) of those who attend religious services less regularly held the same view.

The nationwide survey of 1,400 adults, including an oversample of 400 evangelical Christians aged 18-29, was conducted to find how religion shapes people’s view of America’s role in the world and its foreign policy.
