A Couple Notable Recent Musical Performances on Letterman
Dave’s son use to let his father sing him to sleep and one of his favorite’s was “Stand By Me”, and you can tell that Dave really likes Tracy Chapman’s version, especially how he expressed his thanks at the end of her performance.

Before heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony to induct the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer performed “American Pie” on Friday’s show (taped on Thursday) and totally killed it. From the sound of it, this was a personal request by Dave. But what I probably appreciated the most was him wearing an old “Late Night with David Letterman” jacket, the one from Dave’s old NBC days. Man, I want that jacket, at least a shirt. But seriously, this is one great performance.

Bag of Randomness
- I’ve never been a fan of country music, though I did have an appreciation for it up until the time period acts like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson started to fade. With that said, I did tune into a small bit of the ACM Awards last night and was immediately reminded what I’m not a fan of the genre, but it was interesting to see how the stadium was tricked out and from a production standpoint of the event, I was impressed.
- I bet Arlington was ticked since they kept referring to Dallas the entire evening.
- Personally, 60,000 people seems like a small amount for that event.
- The ACM Awards and the BET Awards really aren’t all that different. Both are directed at a certain culture, take pride at keeping things real, and are known for singing about ungodly sings and then thanking God accepting an award.
- I bet there will be lots of complaints about how bad the sound was inside the venue, which is a very common complaint.
- George Strait had a great neon background of the Dallas skyline behind him during his performance.
- I do find Reba adorable, she makes me smile everytime she talks.
- I like Tony Romo as the quarterback of my favorite football team and as a person, but him walking out with a football, throwing it, and then saying some scripted line about a three-month-old NFL issue was hard to swallow. Romo also introduced performer Dierks Bentley. I wonder if the Mavs weren’t in the playoffs, could they have landed Dirk Nowitzki to introduce him. Until last night, I that Dierks Bently was just a weird name for a band, not a person.
- Miranda Lambert is from my wife’s hometown, yet I never hear a kind word from my in-laws about her, but I’ve been too shy to actually ask them why. I have no opinion about her. I do tell WifeGeeding that Lambert may be the most famous thing out of Lindale, but she (WifeGeeding) is the best looking thing to come out of that town.
- We took a minor roadtrip to Burerlson on Saturday to visit WifeGeeding’s aunt as they were having a mini-family reunion. It is fun listening to older siblings reminisce.
- I’ve playfully ranted about how certain redundancies annoy me, like when people say “PIN Number”, “Hot Water Heater”, and “Cheddar Cheese” (Is there any other type of cheddar?). But this weekend I ate a bit of humble pie as I talking about petrified wood and referred to it as “petrified rock” – rock itself is already petrified.
- A lot of people rant and rave about North Main BBQ in Euless so I decided to give it a try, and my expectations were low since its a buffet. My assumption that the meat would be dry was correct. If you ask for the moist part of the brisket they will pull it out from the back, and it was good, but not great. I’d say their good brisket is still better than Hard 8.
- Today’s clean joke that you think is dirty: What word begins with a “C”, ends with a “T”, has a “U” and an “N” in it, is hairy on the outside, and wet in the middle? A coconut.
- My latest addiction is Mediterranean food.

- I’m not giving away any spoilers, but last night on ‘Mad Men’ there was a scene with Travelers Cheques, which I’m still surprised are still sold today. When I worked as a teller at a credit union during my college days, those things were hard to process. But the best line of the night from the show was – You’re a very beautiful girl. It’s up to you to be more than that.
- ’60 Minutes’ had a segment on TED Talks last night and talked to Amy Cuddy, who has one of the most popular TED Talks of all time, which is about body language. I kinda felt for her last night. Despite her already being successful, being on ’60 Minutes’ is a big achievement, but she had lipstick on her teeth and I’m sure she hated to see that.

- Marshall, Texas made it on ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ last night. Apparently, a quarter of all patent cases in the U.S. are filed in the town. It sure was interesting that Samsun built an ice rink outside the courthouse which cost just under a million dollars.
