Liberty University has a tradition of offering a Hell House

For 43 years, Scaremare staff have used the heart-pounding experience to relay the life-changing message of Jesus Christ to visitors. The event, sponsored by Liberty’s Center for Youth Ministries, has grown to become one of the largest of its kind in the Southeast.

“Scaremare entertains and challenges thousands to consider their own mortality,” said Dr. Steve Vandegriff, director of Scaremare and a professor of youth ministries in the School of Divinity. “This unique event is like no other in that it uses the Halloween season to present a message of life found only in Christ.”

More than 27,000 guests attended last year, and over 4,000 responded to the Gospel message.

Their Scaremare website has a real creepy/spooky factor to it.  The “Groups” section states the local Chick-fil-A will be open until 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays during the event.  Our local Chick-fil-A closes at 10 PM.  Individual tickets are $8 but there’s a college and military discount that will cut it down to three bucks.

Pictures of the event from this year and previous years can be viewed on their Facebook page.

  • I took the family to the only Sub Zero Ice Cream store in the area, which is in Hurst.  That’s where they make the ice cream right in front of you by using liquid nitrogen and mixing cream and other ingredients, and get to see a cloud of cold stuff overflow from the counter.  The kids weren’t as impressed as I thought they’d be, and the ice cream seemed a bit chunky since they freeze it right in front of you and hand mix it.  As for taste, it was okay, I’d rather make a trip to Marble Slab or DQ to get a Blizzard.  I also didn’t think the staff was all that friendly or helpful.
  • ESPN used Beth Mowins to do the play-by-play announcing for their television broadcast on Saturday.  It was the first time I heard a woman broadcast a football game.  I’ll admit it was a bit of an adjustment for me though she was just fine in her job.  Little did I know, but she’s the second woman to do play-by-play for the NFL, though it was on radio. That article states Gayle Sierens was the first woman to provide play-by-play, but it was three decades ago.
  • When I need to heat something for 30-seconds in the microwave, I usually just do it for 33-seconds to avoid moving my finger to the zero button.  I can’t tell if that makes me lazy or more efficient.

A movie clip that always makes me smile

As Disney fans, we loved the live action and animated movie Enchanted, and you can still catch us singing the songs from time to time.  I’ve heard it described as a parody and love letter to all the Disney classics.   It’s hard to believe the movie is eight years old, but now a sequel with the original main cast seems to be around the corner.

I love this scene and song from the movie.  Central Park was a fantastic location and the choreography (of probably over a thousand people total) is fantastic.  Per IMDB, the five-minute scene took 17-days to shoot.  This song made me fall in love with Amy Adams. Though I do have a thing for Jodi Benson’s singing in The Little Mermaid.  Maybe I have a thing for redheads and not know it. She has a cameo in the movie as well.

So here you go, start your weekend with a smile.

That’s one way to use the ballpark in the off season

Padres to convert Petco Park into nine-hole golf course

The San Diego Padres have done some creative things outside of baseball to attract customers and potential fans to their ballpark. Add golf to the list of special events booked at Petco Park.

The Padres, in partnership with Callaway Golf, have announced The Links at Petco Park, a nine-hole golf “experience” taking over the stadium from Nov. 5-8. Golfers can pay a fee to take shots onto the playing field from various tees along a temporary course designed inside the venue.
