  • I think it wasn’t until my late twenties in which I realized there really isn’t any ocean front property in Arizona.  It was one of those things were I just got caught up in the melody and chorus of a song and never really thought about the lyrics or the overall meaning.  That then made me think of the USS Arizona and other battleships that have a state name and are landlocked, which is a bit incongruous.
  • I’ve been trying to repair a garage door for over a year now.  It will work, then break, I tweak, it breaks.  I try my best to repair things on my own, but this thing conquered me and now I’m out $285 for a new strut and some adjustments.  The guy kept trying to upsell me on a new garage door saying he could do it at a price cheaper than any other  place, but I had to bite now.  I didn’t bite.
  • WifeGeeding was bathing the kids upstairs and unbeknown to me, started to come back down for something and spied on me.  She may or may not have watched me eat out of a tub of ice cream and passionately sing along to Phil Collin’s Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) video that was being Chromecasted on the television.
  • This shower thought on Reddit put in a reflective spirit – The Simpsons has been on the air long enough that I’ve stopped identifying with the kids and started identifying with the adults.

  • The mention of Debi Thomas makes me think of my childhood crush of Katarina Witt.  Here’s an old magazine ad she did for Diet Coke.  And yes, I know there are other pictures of her in a particular magazine.  Trust me, I know….a good friend told me.

  • Wired – J.J. Abrams, Star Wars Superfan, on Directing The Force Awakens – For some reason, I really connected with this part, “You know the moment when you reconnect with someone after years apart? You see the lines on their face, you think, oh, they’ve lived 10 years! Or when you see someone has a scar they didn’t have—physical or emotional—you recognize it.  Man, when I attended my 20-year high school reunion last year, the lines around the eyes of certain females really stood out, they weren’t there the last time I saw their face 20 years earlier, and I wondered of all the stories that could fill those wrinkles.
  • We all know Han Solo is in the new movie.  We all know he’s older, and expect him to be wiser, but I hope he’s still a smart ass.
  • There’s a Lego type cartoon that is on based on Star Wars and I’ll watch them with the kids, which are a comical summary of what happened in all the movies.  Sadly, those cartoons let loose “the secret” that [spoiler alert] Darth Vader is Luke and Leia’s father.  I guess I shouldn’t have expected the kids to have the same “big reveal” experience I had.
  • I miss those weekend afternoons, before the days of digital television and the Guide menu and when the paper television guide was small, and channel surfing and being delightfully surprised when you land on the USA Network and discover the Star Wars trinity was playing.
  • Mondays are rough on WifeGeeding, which means an early bedtime, which means I have to postpone watching the latest episode of ‘Fargo’ until the next night.  If that ain’t love I don’t know what is.

Prosper High School Pep Rally

I just saw this over at LiberallyLean who stated that pep rallies aren’t what they used to be.  He couldn’t be more correct.

Just when I thought people might be exaggerating how big high school football is in Texas, something like this proves me wrong.

  • I was happy to see SNL bring back Larry David to play Senator Bernie Sanders.
  • It’s one thing to host SNL, but I’d love to just introduce the musical guest.
  • It’s nice to see Aaron Rodger get brought back down to Earth, I just wish the same would happen to Tom Brady.
  • TCU has been treading water holding onto a top ten spot all season, they squeaked by Kansas State and Texas Tech and haven’t really played a quality opponent until Saturday.  I’d still like to see Trevone Boykin, his play has really impressed me, especially how he carried his team for that miracle win at Kansas State.
  • I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again, the last thing Baylor wants to see is a TCU team that has “nothing else to play for”.  TCU’s most meaningful game going forward won’t be a bowl game, but the one against their most hated rival.  Seriously, there’s more hype about that game than any bowl they’ll get invited to. However, if TCU wideout Doctson is out, Baylor shouldn’t have much to worry about
  • What I don’t like about a soft college football schedule and style points is that I feel like I’m buying a diamond and then discovering it’s cubic zirconia, or that you decided to vote for a candidate because you think he or she is the real deal and then when they get elected they go against campaign promises.  Playing sports is about competition and proving your worth and capability under adversity, and soft schedules and style points go against the essence of competition.  I’m somewhat reminded of some football players in Mineral Wells that bragged about their winning season and personal records, but they were only playing at the small private Christian school that competed against other small private Christian schools.  Some of them would come back to public school and join a mediocre football team and find they were no better than third string.  The look in their eyes realizing they were only great because their level of competition was weak is something that has stuck in my mind.
  • I can’t remember when college football got a bit stingy about uniforms.  When I was in high school and college you used to see players trying to show off their stomachs.  Miami and Florida State seemed to be the most prominent in my memory.
  • I enjoy watching Oklahoma State football because they always feel like an underdog to me.  I also enjoy watching Kansas State football because I have the utmost respect for Bill Snyder.
  • A San Antonio high school has a high powered offense – Roosevelt’s regular-season finale wasn’t just an 83-65 win. It broke a state record that wasn’t even a week old. The Rough Riders compiled 906 yards of total offense. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), Roosevelt’s mark is a state record. The mark is the fifth-highest ever recorded in the nation.
  • I haven’t deleted, removed, or prevented a comment from showing on this blog in forever.  However, once a month I’ll check the spam comments folder, which is full of spam comments (I get over a hundred a day), and occasionally a few legit comments will land in there.  So if you posted a comment and it didn’t appear, please don’t think I did anything intentionally to keep it from appearing.  I’ve tried to adjust the spam filter settings several times over the past two years, but I guess there’s no perfect setting.  I noticed a few comments from RPM and ALEC appeared in that folder, so my apologies.
  • I really enjoy reading David Gergen’s political analysis. The man only served four presidents in both political parties.  I thought his piece on Bush 41’s remarks on Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Bush43 were insightful.
  • Three weeks ago, life couldn’t be better.  I’ve been in a funk since then, dwelling in the doldrums, but things are looking better.  Too often I think there’s a quick fix or some switch I could just flip, but it’s a process that times time and effort to get to a better place.

  • I’m quite certain First Baptist Dallas now has plans to form a Super PAC after this ruling – The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in an opinion issued last week, clarified that churches, designated as nonprofit corporations, are not only permitted to partake in campaigns to recall sitting politicians but can also form a super PAC to band together in those endeavours.
  • I’ve been using a nasal steroid for my allergies for most of my life, but it wasn’t until I watched this video that I learned I’ve been doing it wrong.  I’ve always squirted the stuff straight into each nostril, but the doctor in the video states that once in the nostril, squirt towards the ear.
  • Those McDonald’s commercial with Mike Ditka as a Green Bay Packer and Jerry Rice as a Dallas Cowboy makes me feeling like I’m watching and old ‘Super Friends‘ where Bizzaro Superman makes an appearance.

  • Robin Williams’ will prevents use of outtakes for ‘Aladdin’ sequel – Unfortunately, Disney had to ditch the plans when they discovered Williams’ will prevents them from using his name, taped performances or voice recordings for 25 years after his death. Such a move protects the actor’s widow, Susan, and three children, Zak, Zelda and Cody, from incurring estate penalties due to his posthumous earnings.

  • I’m not sure why, but I was hoping the new Peanuts movie would come in first at the box office this weekend, but it came in second behind the new James Bond movie.
