- I received an odd fundraising letter from Hardin-Simmons this week, but perhaps it may be a more common practice used by other universities than I realize. It was from a person that only attended the university for one or two years and never graduated from the institution. She stated she transferred to an Ivy League school (can’t blame her) and then earn her MBA from one of our state universities and now feels compelled to “give back” to HSU. To me, it’s a bit odd to highlight someone who transferred from the school and use her as an example to give money to the school. Maybe the answer is simple, money talks.
- Somewhat HSU related since it’s owned by an alumnus and former student – One of my favorite burger joints, Haystack Burgers & Barley, is opening a second location, though it’s not any closer to my neck of the woods.
- Why Are Bibles Printed With The Text in Two Columns Instead of One? – In part, this is simply tradition, as mentioned first being borrowed from the scrolls which the Biblical text was copied from. But there’s a little more to this formatting choice than just tradition. – You can add that reference guide books use two columns because it’s more practical for research and study and it also saves a few pages.
- Brewery reproduces beer dating back to time of Jesus – It says the concoction may help explain why wine was the preferred sacred drink of the Bible. There’s a hint of honey and berries in the cloudy – and flat – nectar, which has a three percent alcohol content.
- I’m horrible at capitalizing the words in the title of a post, now I have a nifty resource – TitleCap – Automatically Capitalize Your Title – You just type in your title, select the writing style, and it does it for you.

- I sacrificed the roof of my mouth to Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch cereal two days ago and I’m still recovering. By far, it’s my favorite cereal, always has been, despite any repercussions.
- I had a disagreement with a coworker who’s not a manager but in a project leadership position. She ended the phone call with, “I hope you appreciate the lecture I just gave you.” Since I’ve only known her for a little over a month, I couldn’t decide if:
- A. She was serious with her intended and specific phrasing.
- B. She didn’t intend for it to be condescending since English isn’t her first language and meant something nicer. From past communications, I’m still not sure of how well her grasp is of the English language. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s questionable.
- C. Was trying to be funny.
- D. Something else I’m missing entirely.
- I enjoyed the second season of ‘Better Call Saul’. The season finale didn’t quite deliver for me, but I appreciate the entire scope of the show and season, not just one episode.
- The world’s largest diamond retailer, Signet Jewelers, is moving To Dallas.
- It’s a bit like when people confuse Obama and Osama – Donald Trump mixes up ‘9/11’ with ‘7/11’ – “Because I was down there and I watched our police and our firemen down at 7/11, down at the World Trade Center right after it came down. And I saw the greatest people I’ve ever seen in action.“
- Buzzfeed – A new McDonald’s in Missouri is offering customers all-you-can-eat french fries when it opens in July. – The location will include many features not seen in a typical McDonald’s, such as the ability to customize your burger or chicken sandwich with hundreds of different sauces and toppings
- CBS’s new Twilight Zone reboot will be a cross between a game and a movie – Interlude told The Wrap that viewers will be able to “change and adapt the story based on what he or she feels,” and will be able to “return repeatedly and have a different viewing experience each time.”
- You may have noticed I’ve been using a thesaurus as of late. It’s not an attempt to make me appear smarter than I am. I’m just trying to have a bit of fun by throwing in some unwonted words.

- I’ve been a bit under the weather as of late and went to the doctor on Friday. The practice I’ve been going to for over a decade has been sold so I’m getting accustomed to a new doctor. I brought BoyGeeding along and the doctor stated that I started late in life to have kids. BoyGeeding is my youngest, he’s four, and I’m forty. Compared to my father, I’m started pretty early, he had me when he was fifty-two.
- After the doctor’s visit, we visited a bakery that was next door. On the way to the restroom, I saw Bob Sturm having coffee with some friends. I doubt he remembers my name though I’m sure he remembers my face from the time I hung out in studio with him and the time he accepted my invitation to speak at my Sunday school class. Being sure he gets noticed and bothered in public more than he’d like, I decided to let him be and avoided eye-contact. However, as we came out of the restroom he made sure to say hello to me and my son. Nice guy, that Bob Sturm, despite sometimes being a sports-bully.
- Busy weekend:
- DaughterGeeding has no been in taking taekwondo for a year now, and on Friday night, she earned her blue belt. If you are keeping track, she’s gone from white, yellow, orange, green, and now, blue.
- I’m not the kind of parent to video and take pictures of everything my children does, but I wish I was rolling film at BoyGeeding’s tee-ball game. A batter hit the ball much harder than expected and it was zooming right towards BoyGeeding. I thought there was no chance in Hades he’d get the ball, but he looked like a hockey goalie sacrificing his body to stop a puck going into net. He dove to his right and used his body to stop the ball, scoop it up, and threw it.
- We took the kids to their first opera at the high tone Winspear Opera House. Granted, it was just “The Billy Goats Gruff” but it was still our first opera. Well, at least the first for me and the kids. WifeGeeding is all cultured and stuff so I’m sure she’s been to an opera before. I’m now cultured for the year.
- Since we were only a mile away from my favorite BBQ place, Pecan Lodge, we decided to have an early dinner. Even though it was only a little after three in the afternoon, the line was still out the door which accounted for about a 45-minute wait to place an order. The young couple behind me were from the Long Island area, and to my astonishment, spending their honeymoon in Dallas. I always thought DFW was a great place to live, but not much for a vacation spot, especially a honeymoon. However, after spending a few days in DFW, they drove to Austin and then came back to Dallas. For the most part, they said Texans didn’t really stick to the stereotype and both were blown away at the friendliness, and they loved seeing all the bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes along the highways. It wasn’t until they started to walk around downtown that they thought about checking out Dealey Plaza and wasn’t aware it became a tourist attraction. As for Pecan Lodge, it was underwhelming for me this time.
- It took me a while to accept that I’m a very sensitive person and that being one can make life harder, but at the same time, it allows me to be more attune to the needs of other people.
- I caught a little bit of Ken Burns’ new documentary on Jackie Robinson and had no idea the Dodgers traded him to the New York Giants, though the trade was never completed. Robinson had already planned to stop playing and take a job as an executive at Chock full o’Nuts.
- An East Texas waitress got a thousand dollar tip to help with college.
- Beef prices on the decline
- GIF – This slide into second base was on the front page of Reddit yesterday. I have no idea how old it is and was the first time I saw it, but thought it was most impressive.
- I had no intent on watching HBO’s Confirmation, the film about Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court confirmation and Anita Hill’s testimony, but when I turned the television on, it just happened to be on and all the archived footage pulled me in. A few thoughts:
- Greg Kinnear’s performance of then Sen. Joe Biden is excellent. It’s not quite on par with Jamie Foxx’s performance of Ray Charles, but it’s pretty darn close.
- The film isn’t favorable towards Biden, so if he was running for president, it would be interesting to see how much it would have affected his campaign.
- There were a couple of casting surprises for me. I’ve got a bit of a crush on Zoe Lister-Jones, from CBS’s ‘Life in Pieces’ and then “Martha” from FX’s ‘The American’s’ did a great job playing Thomas’ wife. And there was also another cast member from ‘The American’s’ in the film.
