  • I binge-watch a lot of the second season of USA’s ‘Mr. Robot’ and I think it’s just as good as the inaugural season. Going into it, I was wary it was going to be hard to follow as many have faulted character hallucinations and flashbacks confusing, but I’m able to follow easily. Craig Robinson, best known from ‘The Office’, is surprisingly convinceable in his role.
  • I’ve never been a best man in a wedding, and only once have I been a groomsman, but I put an asterisk next to that because the bride had so many bridesmaids I feel like I was only included to fill up a slot. Yesterday my cousin called and asked for me to be a groomsman, it felt nice he would even consider me. But then again, I don’t know how many bridesmaids there are, so I may just be taking filling a slot again.
  • A couple tidbits about Miami’s stadium from Peter King’s MMQB:
    • 92 percent of the seats will be shaded by a giant canopy, as opposed to 17 percent in the past. And the grass is new for a pro football field. It’s called Paspalum Platinum grass. The Dolphins say it grows well in shade and in hot, humid climates, and is thicker than normal turf grasses.
  • Yesterday on ‘CBS This Morning’ was a segment on the bison, or American buffalo. To my surprise, it was stated that some bison were crossbred with cattle. The segment wasn’t about the crossbreeding but that’s what caught my attention. Such an animal is called a beefalo. Here’s a picture of one.

Bag of Randomness for Labor Day 2016

  • Most celebrities support some sort cause to fight a disease because of a personal affliction or a close friend or family member has suffered. It’s my understanding  Jerry Lewis’ has no connection to muscular dystrophy and only decided to get involved because it broke his heart seeing children suffer. That’s pretty admirable, especially when you consider the number of decades he committed himself.
  • Remember those childhood days of just having basic cable, something like just a total of five channels, and one of those channels was “wasted” on a telethon?
  • Lewis is now 90-years-old and has a new movie coming out this month in which he’s the lead role, The trailer is below, it also stars the underrated Kevin Pollak and Kerry Bishé from one of my favorite shows, A&E’s ‘Halt and Catch Fire’. Lewis also had a supporting role in a Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood movie that was released back in April

  • That earthquake that hit Oklahoma was felt all the way in Houston. Lots of folks felt it around here, we felt nothing.
  • The Build Team From Mythbusters Are Coming Back With A Netflix Show
  • Emergency response triggered at Ohio school after forty students eat one of the world’s hottest peppers
  • George Carlin recorded a special on September 10, 2001, titled “I Kinda Like it When a Lotta People Die”. It’s finally about to be released.
  • Troy Aikman is still in good shape. this is from a recent run on the Katy Trail:

  • BBQ stuff:
    • Pecan Lodge had a record day on Saturday, per their Instagram:
      • “Yesterday was the single busiest day in the history of the restaurant. We served over 4,000 people. That’s over 360 people an hour- a customer every 10 seconds, non-stop from the time we opened at 11am until we closed at 10pm.”
    • Cattleack Barbeque, which is only open on Thursdays and Fridays, is about to give Saturdays a try starting in October.
    • Texas A&M researchers say beef brisket has health benefits
      • Brisket has a high level of oleic acid which regulates cholesterol levels, according to Dr. Stephen Smith, a professor in the animal science department at Texas A&M.Oleic acid is an omega-9 fatty acid which helps reduce the risk of heart disease by raising your levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), known as “good” cholesterol. Oleic acid also has the added benefit of lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL), known as “bad” cholesterol.

I say it every year. The enthusiasm and passion for college football is great, but the games are too dang long with all the time stoppage.
    • A lot of great upsets in the first week of college football, which was fantastic. And when someone questions why any school would start off their season with a tough or admirable opponent, I just want to treat them like Major Payne. The whole point of sport is challenge and competition.
    • I don’t follow college football closely, and this may be a common thing, but the Longhorn players really seem to ardently love their coach. Or maybe they just enjoy picking him up and tossing him in the air.
    • In Strong’s post-game press conference, he stated he called Buechele’s mother to tell her that her son would be starting.
    • Stolen from Bob Sturm – Sooners, Bruins, and Irish all tried to mess w Texas in Texas. 0-3.
      • He probably should have added Northwestern State.
    • There’s been a lot of talk of the University of Houston becoming a member of the Big XII and with their win over Oklahoma, it’s almost certain. I was surprised at the ratings of that game. Of course, it was going to be a big draw in Houston, but I was surprised it pulled in a 12.8 share. That game was almost the biggest in DFW on Saturday with a 7.3.
      • I only caught part of the game, but it noted that something like 88% of their roster is from the Houston area.
    • When Navy’s quarterback went down, freshman QB Malcolm Perry was pulled from the stands to get dressed
    • Nebraska honored its late punter, Sam Foltz, who was killed in a car crash in July
      • On a 4th-and-4 early in the game, the team came out with 10 men, in punt formation, without a punter. Players on both sides, as well as fans, clapped and cheered to remember the legacy of Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler, who was also killed in the crash.
      • Low – Sam Foltz’s family targeted by burglars during Nebraska game
    • I think if Mike Leach never left Texas Tech, they would have one at least three Big XII titles and one national championship. He had something special there.

    • I was looking at college football scores on SI.com and felt sorry for all the schools, more than expected, that didn’t even have their own logo next to their school.

    • When Tyrone Swoopes entered the game for the Longhorns last night, the play-by-play man mistook the chants of “Swoopes” or “Swoop” for boos.
      • Swoopes wears the number “18”. So does a player on defense. Two teammates with the same jersey number, even if they are on opposite sides of the ball, is unstable.
    • I know there’s a new Bevo and he’s only a year old, but I’m not used to seeing a Bevo with such short horns.
    • Torii Hunter Jr.’s hit (which I thought should have been a penalty) was hard to watch. The announcers seemed timid to say anything about it, but I was certain there was blood dripping from his head as he layed on the ground with medical staff checking on him.
    • Almost all sports fans are aware that the new quarterback for the Longhorns, Shane Buechele, is the son of Texas Rangers player and now bench coach Steve Buechele. But here are a few things I didn’t know about him:
      • He’s the product of a failed vasectomy and the youngest of five.
      • His siblings either Sooners are big Sooner fans. His sisters at their house with the horns down hand gesture.
      • His father and John Elway were roommates in college.
      • That article made Steve Buechele sound like a hyperactive person, but that contrasted with his post game interview.
  • Back in the days, a high school male would have to choose to either be in the band or play football, but now he can do both. But it always throws me when I see a football player with his pads off participating in the band during halftime.
  • High school football picture of the week:
