Bag of Randomness for July 6, 2017

  • It feels like it’s been a while since I posted a Bag of Randomness.
  • My sinus infection got so bad it spread to my eyes. They were red, swollen, and it hurt to blink. For about four solid days it looked like recreational marijuana was legal in Texas and I took full advantage of it.
  • Sometimes cardboard food packages have an area that says “Press Here” which is supposed to make it easier to open. It never works for me, I just end up crushing the box.
  • Queen Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, Marilyn Monroe was born in the same year but on the first of June.
  • Scattershooting yesterday wondering whatever happened to Octomom and all her children.
  • My in-laws are celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary today.
  • Never once have I used a coupon printed on the back of a receipt.
  • The TICKET was talking about church camp yesterday and mentioned Hardin-Simmons. Church camps are a great recruitment tool. I wonder what percentage of incoming freshman have once attended a church camp at the campus.
  • I wonder if President Trump will try his signature handshake on Putin. You know, the one in which he pulls or jerks the handshaker closer to him.

  • Volvo to go all electric with new models from 2019

    • All Volvo car models launched after 2019 will be electric or hybrids, the Chinese-owned company said on Wednesday, making it the first major traditional automaker to set a date for phasing out vehicles powered solely by the internal combustion engine. The Sweden-based company will continue to produce pure combustion-engine Volvos from models launched before that date, but its move signals the eventual end of nearly a century of Volvos powered solely that way.

  • This story is a little bit dated: First Baptist Dallas Church choir sings ‘Make America Great Again’ song to Trump at the Kennedy Center
    • I remember attending a handful events at First Baptist Dallas before Jeffress became the lead pastor. Heck, WifeGeeding and I even had several pre-marital counseling sessions there. That facility was so “old” and it seemed so hopeless that it or any church could thrive in downtown Dallas. He done proved me wrong, ten fold.
  • Also a little dated: Haley complains about spending July Fourth in North Korea meetings
    • I know she didn’t mean ill will and was trying to be light-hearted, but she’s been in politics long enough she should know better. It doesn’t really display an understanding of the sacrifices our troops and others make who are forced to work on holidays and be away from family.
  • Mental Floss – Why Do Hearses Have Metal S-Shaped Scrolls Where the Back Windows Should Be?
    • As you would expect, the answer is because it’s decorative and was once used on horse-drawn carriages. But I recall watching an episode of “How It’s Made” or something similar, and they stated the car companies don’t simply make a hearse. Instead, they just modify cars that just left the assembly line. The demand is so low, it’s easier and cheaper to modify than to make a production line.
    • It’s more fun to write “horse drawn” than “horse-drawn” because I have a mental picture of a horse trying to pick up a writing utensil with his hoof. But then again, I suppose a horse could just draw a carriage in the dirt with his hoof.
    • For the longest time, I thought it was “hurst” and not “hearse”.
    • My first funeral was my grandmother’s. I was in the sixth grade. After the funeral and trip to the cemetery, I separated from the pack and was looking at the hearse as it intrigued me. An adult family member walked over and I said, “At least Grandma got to ride in a Cadillac for her final car ride.” The adult, who was teary-eyed, let out a big laugh. Personally, I didn’t’ intend it to be funny, but took no offense because I was glad I could make someone happy.

    • This doesn’t bother me in the least. It frustrates me at times when I’m watching a movie and can tell part of the trailer is about to display and the suspense is diminished.

  • Armchair political conspiracy theorist – Putin is providing education and technology to North Korea to enhance their weapons program. It’s a way to divide U.S. attention elsewhere and force our military resources to even thinner margins.
  • Over the years, I’ve tried to be less “shoot from the hip” when it comes to political discourse and hope to express any political thought or opinion in a constructive or reasonable way. I’m not trying to change thought or opinion or intentionally fan the flames, just express my own in a civil manner (for the most part). With that in mind….
  • Armchair political pundit: I thought these consecutive tweets from the GOP were odd since neither Clinton are in power or have real influence to do anything. A plan from either of them is useless, and the GOP put both of them out to pasture in November. Perhaps the intent it to continue to associate current Democratic leadership with them with the Democrats are rudderless. Heck, as a Democrat, I’m ready to move on from them.
