  • WifeGeeding works at a preschool in a nearby church. They are having various camps this month and when she arrived to work on Thursday the parking lot had a couple of police cars and an armored SWAT vehicle. It turns out the city decided to hold a training exercise but didn’t inform anyone at the church. There is no telling the level of concern many parents had as they arrived to drop off their children.
  • Today is WifeGeeding’s birthday, which means she’s entering the final year of being in her thirties.
  • We shopped at an Aldi grocery store recently. They charge you 25-cents to use a grocery cart.

    • I’m no fan of modern-day country music so I didn’t expect to like this article, but as a U2 fan, I found it delightful, especially the stories with Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison and recording in Sun Studios.

  • Somehow while researching something else I landed on a transcript of a Reagan/Mondale debate. The question of being “born again” was brought up to the candidates. This is how they responded:
    • Reagan: Well, I was raised to have a faith and a belief and have been a member of a church since I was a small boy. In our particular church, we did not use that term, “born again,” so I don’t know whether I would fit that — that particular term. But I have — thanks to my mother, God rest her soul — the firmest possible belief and faith in God.

    • Mondale: I am a son of a Methodist minister. My wife is the daughter of a Presbyterian minister. And I don’t know if I’ve been born again, but I know I was born into a Christian family. And I believe I have sung at more weddings and more funerals than anybody ever to seek the Presidency. Whether that helps or not, I don’t know. I have a deep religious faith. Our family does. It is fundamental. It’s probably the reason that I’m in politics. I think our faith tells us, instructs us, about the moral life that we should lead. And I think we’re all together on that.

    • One thing which really stood out and something I recall watching as a child was President Reagan’s answer on why he doesn’t attend church regularly as president. In short, he said he didn’t want to endanger people because he’s a constant target. I thought it was a fantastic answer and I remember the applause he received. But this time when I reviewed his answer, I noticed he didn’t entirely answer the question, which is posted below. He didn’t answer the part about why he doesn’t invite a minister over like Nixon and Carter used to do. I’m not judging Reagan here, but what I learned from this is that you don’t always have to fully answer a question to get the response you want.

The hidden oil patterns on bowling lanes

I used to work with a semi-pro bowler and once told him that my buddy (the guy who I named my daughter after) and I once won the intramural bowling championship in college. I mentioned my friend was left-handed and he told me that wasn’t fair and then ranted how left-handed bowlers have an unfair advantage because their side of the lane isn’t used as much and the oil pattern is more consistent. Well, this video addresses the issue.
