Flash Flood

Apparently earlier this year, on my birthday to be exact, the Australian town of Kellick Creek experienced a flash flood. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on whether you happen to be an optimist or on your way to suicide) someone happened to have a video camera handy and captured the flash flood on tape. I’d heard the term flash flood before; living in the flattest province in the country, flooding of any sort is always on the minds of its residents. I had no idea just how flash-y they meant.

You can literally see the wave coming from what looks like a hundred yards away, as it rushes through a “valley”, destroying everything in its path.

First White Child Born

A friend of mine got a call from a road tripping pal who ranted about a strange monument he had encountered in some nowhere town in Kansas – a monument to ‘the first white child born.’ For some reason I found myself wanting to see what this ridiculous monument could possibly look like – which leads to this google image search I now share with you (link) It turns out that the first white child born was a momentous occasion for many American burgs and townships.

Pet Bear Just Like Dog, Family Says

13831571_240×180.jpegA Pennsylvania family turns heads driving down local roads with their pet bear sticking her gigantic head out the window.

Abby is much like a dog to the Friday family — just a little bigger and with wild animal instincts.

“I just remember, there’s always the wild animal in them,” said Abby’s owner, Sam Friday. “Treat an animal like you want to be treated. Give the love and caring and they’ll give you loving and caring back.”

Friday said he grew up in the country and always loved animals. He said he had a different bear for 20 years before getting Abby.

“It’s how it’s always been. I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Samantha Friday. “Who gets to play with a bear or have a bear wrestle them?”

The Fridays said they have a license to own the bear through the state game commission.

Sam Friday said the big pet loves to go for rides.

“Take her down to the gas station for M&Ms,” he said. “People watch her with her head out the window like a dog panting.”

It’s not always easy raising a bear, but it’s worth it, said Sam Friday.

“In the middle of the night, you hear crash, boom, and the refrigerator is totally empty, or you don’t feel good and she starts licking your ear,” he said. “We ride around and she’s just like a person and holds on to you. She’s awesome.”
