Bag of Randomness for Thursday, December 21, 2017

  • One day this week we received three Christmas cards from friends. Each of the three misspelled “Geeding” differently. Ode to joy. It means more to me they took the time and effort to send then the misspellings, it’s just a joyful annoyance.
  • Speaking of Christmas cards, we send out a Happy Holidays Christmas newsletter but trick it up a bit by making it a trivia game. We call it the Geeding Guessing Game and the reader has to guess if each item is true or false. Depending on the reader’s score, they are labeled either a friend or should be removed from the mailing list. This is our eleventh year creating it. If you’d like to see this year’s version, here’s a PDF.
  • One of my most high-maintenance readers sent me a strongly worded message saying he missed the old commenting system on the blog because it gave him the option of receiving an email if someone replied to one of his comments. To appease him, I added a new plugin which mimics that feature. It hasn’t been tested so I’m just crossing my fingers it works. Basically, all you have to do is select the check-mark box underneath the comment box. Right now I don’t have it properly aligned with the field label but it will work for now. So far, I’m pretty happy I’ve ditched the old commenting system.
  • I follow 94-year-old Chuck Yeager on Twitter, and from what I’ve read, it’s really him managing it and not a staffer. I’ve replied to two of his tweets and each time he’s replied back. Earlier this week he tweeted he met Orville Wright and I asked if he had a firm handshake.
  • The ‘CBS Evening News’ had a story about people who thief packages left on the front door of homes. Two things in the story stood out. In some places, police are baiting packages with GPS devices and one man invented and is now selling booby-trapped boxes containing blank shotgun shells to scare thieves which I thought was pretty funny. Here’s some YouTube footage of the booby-trapped packages if you are interested.
  • I found this awesome U2 kids t-shirt. I wish I could buy an adult version.
  • I felt uncomfortable typing that last sentence.
  • My favorite ‘X-Files’ episode has to be “Bad Blood” which was written by Written by Vince Gilligan. My second favorite would be “The Post-Modern Prometheus”, that’s the one shot in black and white and Mulder and Scully dance at the end to Cher’s cover of “Dancing in Memphis”.

You Can’t Handle The Truth About Santa

Very few things made me smile and laugh as much as this did. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve quoted this scene with my friends.

Warning, same rough language as in the original scene in the movie.

I provided the GIF (how I first saw it, all three-minutes and seven-seconds) along with the YouTube video (which doesn’t have any audio).

Death Star Construction Timelapse

This video is a personal project (fan film) created by myself and my FX-guru brother Isaac Botkin. He planned and crafted all the visuals in Lightwave 3D, and I composed the original score. The goal was to come up with an original melody, but keep it very much within the style and flavor of John William’s iconic Star Wars scores.
