Drinking Sewage

It used to be so final: Flush the toilet and waste be gone.

But this week, for millions of people here in Orange County, pulling the lever will be the start of a long, intense process to purify the sewage into drinking water – after a hard scrubbing with filters, screens, chemicals and ultraviolet light and the passage of time underground.

On Friday, the Orange County Water District will turn on what industry experts say is the world’s largest plant devoted to purifying sewer water to increase drinking water supplies. They and others hope it serves as a model for authorities worldwide facing persistent drought, predicted water shortages and projected growth.

The process, called by proponents “indirect potable water reuse” and “toilet to tap” by the wary, is getting a close look in several cities.

Ga. man tries to deposit fake $1M bill

million_dollar_bill_ny117.jpgA bank teller in Clearwater had a million reasons not to open an account for an Augusta, Ga., man Monday, authorities said. Alexander D. Smith, 31, was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of forgery after he walked into the bank and tried to open an account by depositing a fake $1 million bill, said Aiken County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Michael Frank.

The employee refused to open the account and called police while the man started to curse at bank workers, Frank said.

The second forgery charge came after investigators learned Smith bought several cartons of cigarettes from a nearby grocery store with a stolen check, Frank said.

The federal government has never printed a million-dollar bill, Frank said.

Oral Roberts University Gets $70 million from someone not connected to the institution

Oral Roberts University, the debt-ridden evangelical institution riven by scandal, has been handed a $70 million lifeline.

Mart Green, founder of the Christian office and educational supply store chain Mardel, said Tuesday he would immediately give $8 million to the university, with the rest to come after a 60-to-90-day review of the university’s financial records.

Green said his family must approve the financial review before the $62 million is given and is requesting at least two seats on the board of regents for his family members.

“Let’s straighten the ship,” Green said, four days after the school’s president stepped down amid accusations that he misspent funds to support a lavish lifestyle. “Let’s get integrity. Let’s get trust built back and the rest will go away.”

Green said he has never attended the university and had no ties to the Oral Roberts family. He said he has been following the university’s story in the media in recent weeks and decided he wanted to help.
