Toy kitchens for boys?

boykitchtoysap.jpgThe idea of boys playing in kitchens seems more palatable to parents today than in earlier generations, probably because of how they were raised and how they run their households, says Dr. Michael Kaplan, an assistant clinical professor at the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut.

“Men are reshaping and rethinking their roles,” he says. “They are doing much more (cooking and housework) than they ever have.”

Young fathers also are more likely than their fathers to have been reared by a working mother, Kaplan says.

And television has contributed to making men more comfortable in the kitchen.

“Some of these roles have been helped by the Food Network,” says Robert J. Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University in New York. The network “has defeminized the kitchen” with programs such as “Iron Chef,” “Emeril Live” and “The Restaurant,” he says. Many young children – boys and girls alike – also enjoy watching the enthusiastic Rachael Ray.

Toy manufacturers say they try to offer plenty of gender-neutral options. Pottery Barn Kids, which introduced pink and blue sets several years ago, is adding a white line this holiday season.

Tom Prichard, vice president of Little Tikes, the Hudson, Ohio-based toy manufacturer, says the company doesn’t track how many of its kitchens are bought for boys or girls, but employees regularly receive letters from parents who write that their sons love them.

Man Says He Bit Into Burger, Found Condom

RUTLAND, Vt. — A Rutland man said he found a condom in a burger he had ordered from Burger King.

Miguel Hartless said he made the discovery after the third bite of the Southwestern Whopper he ordered from the Rutland restaurant, WPTZ-TV in Plattsburgh, N.Y., reported.

Hartless said he immediately got sick and has since had nightmares about the incident. He also has had tests for sexually transmitted diseases, which he said came back negative.

Hartless said he’s saving the burger, which he put in his freezer, as evidence for a lawsuit against the owner of the restaurant for pain and suffering as well as medical expenses.

A manager at the Burger King in Rutland declined comment.

As for Hartless, he said he will be more cautious when he eats fast food.

Iraqi policewomen are told to surrender their weapons

The Iraqi government has ordered all policewomen to hand in their guns for redistribution to men or face having their pay withheld, thwarting a U.S. initiative to bring women into the nation’s police force.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees the police, issued the order late last month, according to ministry documents, U.S. officials and several of the women. It affects all officers who have earned the title “policewoman” by graduating from the police academy. It does not apply to men in the same type of jobs.

Critics say the move is the latest sign of the religious and cultural conservatism that has taken hold in Iraq since Saddam Hussein’s ouster ushered in a government dominated by Shiite Muslims. Now, that tendency is hampering efforts to bring stability to Iraq by driving women from the force, said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. David Phillips, who has led the effort to recruit female officers.
