They pulled an Andy Dufresne

andy_with_poster.jpgTwo inmates escaped from a county jail, hiding the holes they made in the walls by putting up photos of bikini-clad women, officials said.Authorities searched over the weekend for Jose Espinosa, who was awaiting sentencing for manslaughter, and Otis Blunt, who was facing robbery and other charges. They also launched a review of jail security.

The two got out of the Union County jail Saturday evening. The county prosecutor’s office said the two apparently removed cement blocks from two walls, squeezed through the openings, jumped to a rooftop below and then made it over a 25-foot-high fence. The section they escaped from was supposed to be the most secure area of the facility.

Waterboarding Historically Controversial

I’ve heard a lot about waterboarding in the news, but haven’t really payed a lot of attention about it.  But I did find it interesting that back in 1947 the U.S. charged a Japanese officer with war crimes for carrying out waterboarding on a U.S. civilian, and that the Washington Post had a front page photograph of U.S. soldiers using the technique back in 1968.

Beliefnet’s Most Inspiring Person of the Year 2007

librescuprofilepic.jpgThis year Beliefnet’s Most Inspiring Person Award goes to Dr. Liviu Librescu. This Romanian-born, Israeli-American scientist and educator was an engineering professor at Virginia Tech, before a gunman, student Seung-Hui Cho, killed him–and 31 others–during a shooting spree at the school last April. A Holocaust survivor, Librescu had barricaded the door of his classroom with his body and told his students to jump out of windows when he saw Cho was trying to make his way in. Because of his actions, all but one of his students survived the attack. Beliefnet readers overwhelmingly voted for Librescu, amazed by his heroic actions that fateful day.

It serves 125, takes eight hours to cook and is stuffed with 12 different birds … now that really IS a Christmas dinner

This massive roast, the proud creation of Devon farmer Anne Petch, weighs almost four stone (more than most airlines’ baggage allowance), costs £665, and has enough meat to serve 125 people.

It contains about 50,000 calories and takes more than eight hours to cook in an industrialducksized oven.

Anne, who runs the Heal Farm shop near Kings Nympton, said: “The True Love Roast has a bird for each of the 12 days of Christmas.

“It uses skinless breast meat from several birds of each species with flavours that work well together.”

The roast contains turkey, goose, chicken, pheasant, partridge, pigeon squab, Aylesbury duck, Barbary duck, poussin, guinea fowl, mallard-and quail with herb and fruit stuffings.

Anne added: “It takes about 45 minutes to build the roast. However, it takes at least three hours before that to bone the birds and another couple of days to make all the stuffings.

“We’ve been making smaller multibird roasts for a while, but I wanted something with a real wow factor.

“It was only when I was halfway through the first prototype that I realised what a crazy idea it was. But I still think that next year we’ll have something even more spectacular, perhaps a 21-bird roast.
