Couple was born, died on the same day
An elderly Sioux Falls couple died together Saturday, side by side, of separate illnesses.
Diana Kraft and her husband, Kent, had been married for about 43 years, both born on the same day: Sept. 2, 1941. Diana Kraft had battled Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and Kent had a brief illness.
Police spokesman Loren McManus said the deaths of the Krafts were not suspicious or criminal. He said Kent Kraft had a heart condition.
It was a unique situation, reminiscent of the movie “The Notebook,†he said.
“It’s kind of like that. They’ve been together forever and she was very, very sick and she died,†McManus said. “Whatever effect that had on him, that was it.â€
Joel Vipond, funeral director at Miller Funeral Home, said he has never experienced this in his 30 years of funeral service – in which a couple are born and died on the same day.
“It is about as unusual as it gets,†he said. “To have a couple die in the home of totally unrelated causes is rare.
“It’s tough enough to lose one (parent), but it’s doubly devastating to lose them both.â€
The couple met in Mitchell while Kent Kraft was a Dakota Wesleyan University student and Diana Schroder was working at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a nurse.
The Krafts have two children, Deborah of Sioux Falls and Calvin of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and a grandson, Andrew, of Sioux Falls.
Meet the man from M&S who tests your pets’ ready meals
Like a seasoned wine taster, Simon Allison sniffs and peers at the product he is testing.
Then he samples a soupcon, noting the blend of flavours and aromas.
Only when he is completely satisfied will Marks & Spencer put the dish on the shelves – among the pet foods.
Graduate Mr Allison is a senior food technologist for Marks & Spencer with special responsibility for pet produce.
He insists he relishes the task and has trained his palate to detect the delicacies preferred by dogs and cats – and their owners.
He said: “It is just the same as if I was working in the ready-meals department. I love my job. It is a brilliant area and eating the product is a fundamental part.
“You have to chew it a bit.
“I have trained my palate to look for materials that we will not allow in the recipe, such as tripe – pet owners react badly to the smell of tripe.
“I’m looking for a patè texture, almost to the point where you could spread it on crusty bread.”
His favourite is the organic luxury chicken dinner with vegetables for cats.
“It has the taste and aroma of chicken and some of what you call the red flavours – things like heart and liver; gutsy, savoury notes.
Sentenced to jail and then married by same judge
WHEELING, W.Va. – It wasn’t a typical wedding. For one thing, the groom was in handcuffs. Kevin Felder and Misty Johnson exchanged vows Thursday, Valentine’s Day, just minutes after he was sentenced to five to 18 years in prison for second-degree robbery.“It’s a decision between the two of us. I am sorry for what I did, and I want to be a better man when I come home,” said Felder, who wore an orange prison uniform.
Judge James Mazzone performed the wedding after sentencing him.
Felder took $340 during a convenience-store robbery on Sept. 5. Felder was on probation at the time for a July 20 domestic-violence offense involving Johnson.
Johnson said goodbye as Felder was escorted from the courtroom.
“I love him that much,” she said tearfully. “That’s all I can say.”
