Little or No Blogging Today

Sorry for the lack of posts today. I had to teach a class last night and I’m doing my best to finish my last week of work at Fidelity on a very strong note so my coworkers friends will be left on good standing as my projects are handed off to them.

Speaking of teaching last night, I received an email yesterday afternoon from the university director. She said she needed to speak with me. My first thought was that she found out I had a blog and didn’t like something I had posted or something, but then again I remember listing her as the person I reported to on some paperwork I had to fill out on a background check. I replied back to her email that I was teaching later that night and would stop by her office.

I was pretty nervous as I entered her office, but it turns out I shouldn’t have been.  She just wanted to promote me from an adjunct instructor to lead instructor with the understanding that I attend a lunch time seminar, which happens to be next week, which I’m taking off before I start my new full time job.  Timing couldn’t have worked out any better.  Good times.

Dwyane Wade bought a church for his mom

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) — Dwyane Wade sat in the first pew Sunday afternoon, looked at his mother, and simply couldn’t hide his emotions.

She had made him cry often before. This time, it was different.

“This is tears of joy,” he said, beaming. “Tears of joy for my mother.”

Before she was known as the mother of the Miami Heat superstar and 2006 NBA finals MVP, Jolinda Wade was known as an inmate, a fugitive, a drug user and drug seller.

Her life turned around seven years ago when, after years of urging by her children, she got help and got clean. Along the way, she devoted her life to spreading the word of God, starting her first ministry while doing time in state prison.

Now, that ministry has a new home, called the Temple of Praise.

Jolinda Wade’s very own church.

Her son bought it, and her children and her congregation gathered to dedicate it Sunday.

20% of U.S. Has Never Sent E-mail

Roughly one-fifth of all U.S. households are disconnected from the Internet and have never used e-mail, according to research firm Parks Associates.

A recent phone survey of U.S. households by Parks found 20 million households are without Internet access, approximately 18 percent of all U.S. households.

“Nearly one out of three household heads has never used a computer to create a document,” said John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates, in a statement. “These data underscore the significant digital divide between the connected majority and the homes in the unconnected minority that rarely, if ever, use a computer.”

Age and education are factors in this divide, Park found. One-half of those who have never used e-mail are over 65, and 56 percent had no schooling beyond high school.

Parks found 7 percent of the 20 million disconnected homes plan to subscribe to an Internet service within the next 12 months. In 2006, Parks found that 29 percent of all U.S. households — 31 million homes — did not have Internet access, citing low perceived value of the Internet.

“Many people just don’t see a reason to use computers and do not associate technology with the needs and demands of their daily lives,” Barrett said.
