9-Year-Old Uses Jiujitsu on a Pit Bull

During jiujitsu lessons Tuesday evening, instructor Matt Baker asked 9-year-old Drew Heredia what he would do if put in a certain position he was teaching.

“I’d get on my back and do a choke hold,” he said.

It’s the same thing Drew did last week when he saved a 12-year-old girl from being mauled by a pit bull. Using a tactic he learned in class, he put the attacking dog in a chokehold and held it for at least 20 minutes until help arrived.

“I wanted my son to be in this sport in case there was ever an emergency, in case he ever had to protect himself,” mother Amy Heredia said. “I thought he’d maybe use it as a man, but I had no idea as a child.”

Texas Loses The Lead

Mississippi now has the nation’s highest teen birth rate, displacing Texas and New Mexico for that lamentable title, a new federal report says. Mississippi’s rate was more than 60 percent higher than the national average in 2006, according to new state statistics released Wednesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The teen birth rate for that year in Texas and New Mexico was more than 50 percent higher.

Lamb bacon is the hottest new belly in town

Bacon lovers take note: There’s a new meat in town. Cured lamb belly is showing up on menus all over, cozying up to eggs at breakfast and standing in for its porcine counterpart in wintry dinners. Because it has a lower fat, lamb bacon doesn’t crisp up as well as pork. But chefs like its meaty texture and the rich, gamey flavor it adds to hearty winter dishes.

Presidential Get Together

When the past, present, and future presidents gathering yesterday, I was reminded on one of my favorite scenes in Hot Shots! Part Duex.

It’s one of those slap stick comedies my high school and college friends have watched countless times, and it’s one of those where the more you watch it, you’ll notice stuff you’ve missed before.

In this scene. Lloyd Bridges plays President Benson, and all the former presidents (Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush) are gathered together for his library dedication.  During the ground breaking ceremony, just keep an eye on the second to last president.  I’ll describe why I think it’s funny after the jump.
