No Tipping On Sundays

My daughter, taking a break from her pursuit of a graduate degree, is a server at the Chili’s a few miles down from our house. Like many others her age she is already pretty critical of the church and its obvious hypocrisies. Her cynicism is neither atypcial nor incomprehensible. Nor does this kind of thing help—her or others.

A group of six church-goers came in the other night after their evening services and sat down, not in her area but in another server’s. When the girl came to greet them and take their drink order, one of them said, “We want to tell you up front that we will not be tipping you tonight because …”

Are you ready?

“… we do not believe in people working on Sunday.”

Bag of Randomness

  • I’ve had some time to digest the last episode of Lost, so here are some random Lost thoughts.  They are all in blue, so if you don’t care about my Lost thoughts, just skip on down to the black.
  • Maybe Richard Alpert was a crew member on that ship in the middle of the island, the Black Rock?  But then again, the 1954 Richard Alpert appeared to be unaware of the island’s time travel ability.
  • My guess is that the h-bomb is inside that four-toed-statue, but then again I found out the Swan station appears to be made out of concrete and lead. But then again, maybe the bomb was related to the 108 minutes of entering in the code.
  • I bet Daniel’s mother is the lady Ben was talking to in the church, and she knows that Desmond will reach her in 72 hours, thus the hasty timeline. Not to mention, Widmore stated that she’s a “very private person” so all of that seems to ad up.
  • I bet the reason why Charles Widmore asked about Penny’s safety is that he’s worried Ben might have done something to her. Remember, last season Ben’s daughter was killed by a Widmore henchman and Ben approached him telling him that Penny was now on his hit list. Widmore also told Desmond to make sure they both go back into hiding.
  • Desmond and Penny’s son is named Charlie . . . after his grandfather they both can’t stand? Hmmmm, interesting.
  • I read in one review that the novel “Utopia” was written in Latin, and the leaders on that island in the novel were called Bencheaters. A possible connection?
  • The young Charles Widmore stated that no one knows the island better than he does. That was interesting. Is Widmore crazy rich because someone gave him knowledge of the future, kinda like Biff finding that sports almanac in Back to the Future II that every male has wished that would happen to him.
  • The young Widmore was also called Jones in the show, not sure why.
  • I wonder if Widmore knows Jacob?
  • Faraday stated that Ellie, the 1954 Other pointing a rifle at him, looked “so much like someone I use to know.” I bet she is somebody’s mother.
  • There was one camera shot that reminded me of my Halo playing days, the one where you were starring down the barrel of the rifle when Locke and his friends were captured.
  • Daniel’s ability to hear the dead is going to prove to be very helpful, which will make him invaluable.
  • The h-bomb is named Jughead, which was an actual nuclear test that took place in 1954.
  • The painting in Widmore’s office had a lot of island references.
  • It was interesting that an episode of Lost aired without Ben, Hurley, Jack, Jin, Kate, Sayid, or Sun.
  • A little something from Lostpedia about the name Jughead, which was written on the h-bomb: Forsythe Pendleton “Jughead” Jones III was a regularly featured character in Archie Comics, notable as the lead character in a 1990 cartoon series, Jughead’s Time Police. In the series, Jughead, using a special beanie given by an unknown benefactor, travels through time fixing disturbances in the timeline with the help of one of his own descendants from the 29th century.
  • I would love to see this tree the moment the weight of the ice lessons.
  • Taken straight from my friend Barry’s blog, a Baylor Law grad: George Bush was at the Baylor/Oklahoma women’s basketball game in Waco last night, and he even gave the Lady Bears a pep talk before the game. They lost.
  • I’m so frustrated with the haircut I got yesterday that I’m about two seconds from shaving it all off again.

  • Palin says she’s not running for president in 2012, I bet she changes her mind.

  • I was reading my friend Andy’s blog the other day and ran across the following statement.  I had to ponder for a while, but ended up agreeing with it, “It has been said that Sunday morning is the most segregated time of the week in America . . .”
