Interesting Funeral for a Baptist Minister

Perhaps no Baptist pastor in history has had a formal goodbye like the one in store for the Rev. Roy Harrell.

Plans for his memorial service include the blowing of the shofar – a ram’s horn – out of Jewish tradition. A Muslim will say a prayer or give a reading.

Though the service will be Christian in character overall, honored guests will include Mr. Harrell’s friends from a range of other religions.

“We want to be very representative of his work for interfaith activities,” said Harry Wooten, minister of music and worship at Dallas’ Royal Lane Baptist Church, where the service will be held next Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Mr. Harrell, who died Sunday at age 80 from thyroid cancer, became Mr. Interfaith of Dallas late in his career.

As vice president and chaplain at Thanks-Giving Square, the downtown Dallas shrine to gratitude, he built a Rolodex full of contacts with Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and more.
