Squirrel caught stealing American flags from graves at cemetery

PORT HURON, Mich. — Squirrel. Thief. Patriot.

A brazen squirrel has been grabbing small American flags placed in a Port Huron, Mich., cemetery and carrying them up to its nest, which now looks as if it’s bedecked in bunting.

Every Memorial Day, volunteers place the flags next to the graves of nearly 1,000 veterans buried at Mount Hope Cemetery about 55 miles northeast of Detroit. The flags were undisturbed during a Mass held Monday.

The Times Herald reports that workers at the cemetery on Tuesday noticed several flags had been torn off their wooden staffs, which were still in the ground.

The mystery was solved in front of superintendent Ron Ceglarek’s eyes. He watched a squirrel detach a flag stapled to a staff and carry it up a tree to the nest.

So what’s the proper punishment?  No nuts for a week?

Bag of Randomness

26552916942fedb9cf5co

  • On my last Bag of Randomness post I mentioned that I didn’t have anything planned for the weekend and was looking forward to having nothing on my plate, well, my plate quickly filled up.  WifeGeeding ended up getting a really bad staph infection (non-MRSA) right above her eye.  Luckily it wasn’t above her real eye, but her glass-eye, but the swelling increased so much that she could no longer wear her glass-eye, she had to remove it.  This caused us to spend about eight hours in the ER on Saturday.  Other than receiving some strong antibiotics through an IV, she also had to get a CT scan to make sure nothing spread to her brain.
  • Thankfully there was a TV in her ER room and a House marathon just happen to be on.
  • She’s been wearing an eye-patch lately, so I refer to her as my pirate-wife.
  • The infection is more or less a boil, and she refers to it as Susan.  Hopefully you get that joke.
  • I was recently at CiCi’s Pizza, and after using the restroom and washing my hands I noticed a sign on the bathroom door that stated “Employees are required to use the foot-pull after washing hands.”  I wish more places had a foot-pull on the bottom of the door.
  • I almost took a picture of the sign, but then thought of the ramifications of what would have happened should someone walk in and see me taking pictures inside the men’s restroom at a very kid friendly place.  Maybe that would make for a good Curb Your Enthusiasm episode.
  • Even though CiCi’s doesn’t have the best of pizzas, I love the BBQ pizza they serve.
  • We ordered a lot of new doorknobs to replace all the brass ones around the house, so far I replaced about half of them.  I messed up on my order, and the business I ordered them from couldn’t have been nicer in helping me.  Great price, great service.  So if you are in need of something similar, check out their eBay page or their website.
  • Here’s an example of the kind of service they provide, this was in one of my communications with them after I provided a complement:

Thanks, Keith. We are old school.  We believe in old fashioned good customer service.  We error on the side of the customer all the time.  It’s the foundation of our entire business model.

Example, I personally answer all my own emails instead of having the staff do it.  They think I’m nuts but I love the personal touch when I work with a company so I figured we should do it too.

  • Two thumbs up to the dude at the Sprint store.  As you know, I’m eagerly awaiting getting the new Palm Pre which comes out this coming Saturday, but the antenna on my current phone, a Palm Treo 700P, broke off.  When I walked into the Sprint store I saw there were like seven people ahead of me, but two folks were at the welcoming desk.  I told the dude I was hoping to get an antenna to last me a week, and he said he could take care of me right away.  He went in the back, slapped on a new antenna, and I was on my way out of the store spending no more than five minutes inside.
  • I just bought a new pair of New Balance shoes for $35, I thought that was a pretty good deal.
  • A few pets in our neighborhood have been killed by what was thought was a bobcat, but it turns out to be a coyote.  One of the owners mention they saw the coyote in their backyard at night, but as soon as he turned on the porch light the coyote jumped his seven-foot fence.  I wouldn’t have guess they could jump that high.
  • WifeGeeding gave me a congradulations card yesterday . . . it marked my one-year anniversary of working as a consultant at SWA.
  • Speaking of which, they have a new, postive, up beat commercial.
  • Oh, and now allow pets to fly.
  • Freebirds > Chipotle
  • Who ever thought of the idea of having Will Ferrell out in the elements with Bear Grylls on Man vs Wild is a friggin’ genius.  The episode airs tomorrow on the Discovery Channel, set your DVRs.
  • I was watching a special on Arlington National Cemetery and learned that the flame on JFK’s grave has only went out twice.  One time some mulch accidentally put it out, not sure how that happened.  The second time happened when a nun was trying to sprinkle some holy water on the grace, but the top of the container came off.  That almost sounds like a Seinfeld episode.
  • G. Gordon Liddy has some hot sports opinions about Judge Sotomayor, “Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate, that would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.”
  • Isn’t Sotomayor a fun name to say?
  • Ever wondered why a doctor would want to perform an abortion?  The doctor that was killed yesterday explained his reason here.
  • I’m looking foward to watching Conan on his first Tonight Show.
  • He’s going to kill Letterman in the ratings for weeks.
  • I never gave Leno a fair shot and always held a grudge against him regarding that whole debacle between him, Carson, and Letterman.  Leno is funny, but his jokes seem a bit vanilla.
  • I did like how Leno had Conon as his last guest, and how he ended the show with all the kids of his staff that were born during his tenure.
  • I also like how Leno and Letterman do bits on their shows honoring past comedians.  Leno specifically pointed out how one of his bits comes from Rodney Dangerfield.
  • Rodney’s real name by the way was Jacob Cohen.
  • And I recently discovered Chevy Chase’s real name is Cornelius Crane Chase.
  • As a kid I use to think he owned the town Chevy Chase, Maryland.  That was around the time I heard that Kim Bassinger bought a town or something like that.
  • Since the local sports scene isn’t that much, I’ve been listening to a lot of NPR and really, really like it.
  • It’s really starting to warm up outside.
  • How many times can I use the word “really.”
  • I really don’t know.
  • Grace
