Miss Landmine cancelled

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – A BEAUTY pageant in which landmine victims were to compete to win a prosthetic limb has been cancelled after the Cambodian government said it was in bad taste, organisers said Monday.

In the ‘Miss Landmine Cambodia’ contest, competitors from around the country were due to appear in a photo exhibition opening on Friday in Phnom Penh, followed by an Internet voting campaign to select the best candidate.

‘I’m not looking forward to breaking the news to the 20 candidates involved, as I know they will be very disappointed in the lack of support from Cambodian authorities,’ Norwegian pageant director Morten Traavik told AFP.

He said the exhibition will not take place after Cambodia’s Ministry of Social Affairs demanded cancellation of the contest to protect ‘the honour and dignity of people with disabilities’.

However the contest, intended to raise awareness about landmines and empower the disabled, will continue with Internet voting at miss-landmine.org, Traavik said.

Ugly Dog Needs A Home

With the head of a meerkat and the body of a spotted piglet, ET the dog would come last in any beauty contest.

And sadly for him, he fares equally badly in the popularity stakes.

For the last three months he has been ignored by visitors to the kennels which took over his care after his elderly owner was unable to cope with him.

Yet staff say he has a delightful personality and would make someone a perfect pet.

Bag of Randomness

  • I remember using Big Chief writing tablets in elementary school.  I think the last time I used them was in the second grade.  There were several covers, but I think the one above is the one I used.
  • I wonder if any school still uses them.  Edit:  They are no longer manufactured – Wikipedia.
  • The last time I really thought about Big Chief tablets was in college.  I was reading A Confederacy of Dunces and the book mentioned the main character writing in them.
  • I believe the paper was gray.
  • One thing that bugged me about that paper is when I just sharpened my pencil and tried to write in it – the pencil was too sharp for the paper.  It was always best to use a dull pencil.
  • A 20-year-old U2 video is up for an MTV Video Music Award
  • I bet NFL pre-game shows will offer live stream tweets or something like that.
  • My church in Mineral Wells was very near the Brazos River and use to perform baptisms there on occasion, but outdoor baptisms are fading.
  • I really enjoyed watching this U2 video – it shows a lot of concert footage
  • Bela Karolyi was in my neighborhood yesterday, that’s pretty cool.
  • I had a manager that once trained under him.
