Ban Comic Sans

In 1995 Microsoft released the font Comic Sans originally designed for comic book style talk bubbles containing informational help text. Since that time the typeface has been used in countless contexts from restaurant signage to college exams to medical information. These widespread abuses of printed type threaten to erode the very foundations upon which centuries of typographic history are built.

While we recognize the font may be appropriate in a few specific instances, our position is that the only effective means of ending this epidemic of abuse is to completely ban Comic Sans.

We understand font selection is a matter of personal preference and that many people may disagree with us. However, if you agree with our position, you can sign the online petition to ban comic sans.

One Reason Why I Don’t Usually Drink Alcohol

Lots of people get flushed in the face when they feel embarrassed, but for many Asians it’s the facial flush itself that can be embarrassing.

About half of all people of Asian descent share a genetic trait that causes a prompt reddening of the face in response to drinking alcohol — the result of an enzyme deficiency that interferes with alcohol metabolism and causes the temporary build-up in the body of a toxic chemical product. For some, the red face is a mere nuisance; for others, it can be accompanied by symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and skin swelling. Talk about a buzz-kill.

In case you are wondering, it’s only the half-Asian side of me that gets flushed, the white side stays normal.

Leaf Carving

Leaf carving is an emerging art form performed on the canvas of leaves from the Chinar tree. The Chinar tree is native to India, Pakistan and China; its leaves closely resemble maple tree leaves. The process of carving is performed by artists using tools to carefully remove the outer surface of the leaf without cutting or removing the veins which add detail into the subject matter of the carving. Leaf artists then take full advantage of the beauty of the leaf’s vein, form and structure to create an artistic carving.

Lots of leaf art here

Bag of Randomness

  • Tonight with be the last night in which Conan O’Brien will be the host of The Tonight Show.  A part of me wonders if it would be worth buying a mug or any other merchandise with the show’s name with O’Brien’s to see if it will become a collector’s item.
  • Leno doesn’t start hosting The Tonight Show until after the Olympics, and with Conan leaving tonight, NBC is going to be forced to run re-runs between now and the start of the Olympics.  Instead of running re-runs of Leno or Conan, I think they should run old episodes of Johnny Carson and some of his classic shows.  It would make for a nice transition, possibly boost ratings, revamp things, but I just don’t know if it can be legally done.  For some reason I think I once heard that Carson held the rights to those shows.
  • Sarah Palin is coming to Texas to campaign for Gov. Good Hair.  This should be interesting.
  • George H. W.  Bush is endorsing Sen Kay Bailey Hutchinson.  I wonder if George W. Bush will back either candidate; I bet he just stays on the sidelines.
  • Southwest Airlines, which was founded in 1971, announced yesterday that for the 37th straight year they made a profit, $99 million for 2009.  That’s pretty darn impressive considering this economic environment and that they don’t charge for checked baggage (first two bags).
  • What else is impressive is their CEO/Director/Chairman of the Board/President Gary Kelly is only paid $1.68 million, which is his total compensation which includes salary, bonuses, and stock options.  The Employees of Southwest Airlines are very fortunate to have a Leader like Gary Kelly.
  • For comparisons sake, the CEO of American Airlines makes $3.4 million a year and the CEO of Delta makes $5.88 million a year.
  • And in case you are wondering, American lost 1.47 billion last year and Delta doesn’t report their earnings until Tuesday.
  • The Haiti tragedy is inspiring songs new and old. Bono , Jay-Z, and Rihanna have created a new song and We Are The World will be remade.
  • Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision is going to make owning a DVR a must because come election time, all you will see is annoying political commercials.
