Why ‘Avatar’ is actually the 26th biggest movie

With everybody reporting how “Avatar” is The Biggest Movie of All Time based on grosses ($1.859 billion and counting), it’s important to remember how rising ticket prices skew the returns.

I just don’t understand why the movie industry does just measure by the actual numbers of tickets sold, rather than what’s earned, it makes no sense other than just to shout out a dollar figure.

Bag of Randomness

  • I’ve always wondered why the city of Arlington didn’t have a light rail system to get people from theme park to them park to stadium to stadium, and then it hit me, the light rail would only benefit the people, not city or the businesses.  Imagine all the revenue that Six Flags ($20 a car?), the Rangers, and that other team would lose if they didn’t charge for parking.  And it wasn’t until yesterday that I learned the people who own private property in the area and charges for parking needs a permit.  If they don’t they can get fined up to $120,000.
  • Even though Apple is great at revolutionizing and building up suspense for a new product release, I think they have finally jumped the shark.
  • I think the iPad will fail, not only because of the craziness of the product name, but it really isn’t that revolutionary.  It’s simply a big iTouch.  And it doesn’t support Flash, as was very evident when Steve Jobs went to the NY Times website and he and the whole crowd saw a huge honking missing app question mark on the front page.
  • Having iTouch and iPad in one sentence is a little awkward.
  • I watched the Oprah/Leno interview.  I thought Oprah asked just about everything I wanted to know, and then some.  It was interesting hearing Leno’s side of the story, but he came across as a bit cold to me.
  • If you were a Saved By The Bell fan you always noticed that the name Peter Engel, who was the executive producer.  I recently discovered he is now a dean at Regent University, the university founded by televangelist Pat Robertson.

  • An interesting read and recap of the Leno/Letterman feud – and I love the YouTube clip in that post where Carson makes a surprise visit to Letterman’s show.
  • With all that has been going on with all the late night hosts, I find it interesting that the movie about the Leno/Letterman feud isn’t airing anywhere on television, but it is on backorder at Best Buy.  But if you really wanted to watch it now, you can do so on YouTube.
  • And since I’m in a Carson kinda mood, here’s his last ever interview.
