After 17 years, Pentagon renovation is complete

The last construction barriers have been removed, the pneumatic hammers have fallen silent, and the final displaced employees have returned.

After 17 years, the job of renovating the Pentagon is complete. Little remains to be done but
the paperwork closing out the $4.5 billion program, which when it began was the world’s largest reconstruction project.

Constructing the building took just 17 frenetic months during World War II and remains one of the great engineering feats in U.S. history.

The Pentagon renovation, however, went on for so long that the first parts completed are showing their age, and some equipment — including fire alarms and electrical and mechanical systems — are already being upgraded.

Yet the remaking of the 6.5 million-square-foot, 29-acre site is considered such a success in industry circles that its “design-build” techniques have influenced other federal projects, including the rebuilding of levees by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans as well as the construction of a new research facility for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.

Bear Cub Killed Because He Was Too Friendly

A bear cub that gained fame when it had its photo snapped with a Newfoundland RCMP officer has been killed because it was feared to be too friendly. Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers with the Department of Justice euthanized the bear on the weekend after it was seen going up to customers at the Copper Kettle Restaurant inside Terra Nova National Park, near Gander. It had already proved to be a traffic hazard on the nearby Trans-Canada Highway.

Officials said they had previously trapped the cub and moved it to a more isolated spot, but it returned. As cute as the cub may have been, it was still dangerous, particularly because where there’s a cub, the mother is never far behind, said Kirby Tulk, acting resource conservation manager with the park.

Take A Guess On Who Said The Following

As a compassionate state, we know that for our children to succeed, they must not only be healthy, but educated. The future leaders of our two nations are learning their fractions and their ABC’s in classrooms all along this border. Immigrants from around the world are being taught in Texas classrooms, and our history is rich with examples of new citizens who have made great contributions. We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, “we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.” And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders, the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.
