Bag of Randomness

  • Last night during Bible study a friend diagnosed me with Pleasing Personality Disorder.  He said something to the effect that it can be a result of having parents who often fought (yup) and one child trying to be the peacemaker (that’s me).  That child will also go through life always trying to please people, and in doing so, become unfulfilled or frustrated or something like that because no matter what he or she does, he or she will never feel that enough was done to please.  By George, I think he’s right with that diagnosis.
  • I often feel like the purpose in my life is to identify needs and try to fill them.  Actually, I say that to people often.
  • He also stated that a lot of times if that child has a sibling, that sibling will usually just not care about being a peacemaker and just kind of accepts what happens, and usually ends up happier in life.  By George, I think he’s right.
  • I’m a fragile, sensitive, and chubby human being.
  • The Big XII has been pretty successful with Heisman candidates.  I’m pulling for RG3 for the most part, but I still think Luck deserves it, if anything, based on strength of schedule.
  • For you Baylor fans, a cute Bear Heisman image.
  • It sure does look like RG3 is a shoe-in to win the Heisman, but I hope Baylor fans will remember to be thankful for the late Baylor alum Gov Ann Richards who was the driving force to get Baylor into the Big XII, which got/kept them in a major conference, which lead to recruiting, which lead him attending Baylor.
  • That’s last bullet was said partly in jest.  I’m not sure what part.
  • Best political to come out of Baylor . . . Bob Bullock?
  • I tried to rescue a dog yesterday coming out of a hospital.  It was a cute Scottish terrier kind of mix, about 20 lbs, had a color, and you can tell he’s been out in the weather for a while because he was pretty dirty.  And the poor thing had a limp as if he was struck by a car, but no matter what I tried, he kept running away from me as I approached him.  I wish I could have filled that dog’s need.

UC Merced Students Ditching Dorms for McMansions

For thousands of collegians, the life of the starving student has been traded in for the lap of luxury. Many of now living in sprawling new homes which were abandoned by foreclosures in one of the hardest-hit cities in the U.S.

These so-called “McMansions” are complete with spiral staircases, sparkling chandeliers and even Jacuzzis.

Third-year student Stephen Chang and five other engineering buddies live in a 3,300-square-foot house that has five bedrooms, four full bathrooms, a gas fireplace and a two-car garage. In the kitchen, there are granite countertops, a walk-in pantry and a stainless-steel sink and dishwasher. The dining room now serves as the ping pong room and a place to store bikes. Chang even has his own bathroom.

They pay about $300 a piece a month — about half as much as they paid to live in the school’s dorms.

So many students have moved to these giant suburban homes that the university has shuttle buses to transport them to and from classes. Chang and Laird said that several other college students lived on their street and that the neighborhood was mostly made up of students.

Interesting Aaron Rodgers Quote About His Faith

From Peter King’s MMQB:

I think what Aaron Rodgers said on his weekly ESPN radio show in Milwaukee and Madison the other day, about wearing religion on one’s sleeve as Tebow does, shows why he’s such a compelling figure. He’s just smart, and he doesn’t have to say, “Hey, I’m smart,” for you to understand. Not when he says things like this:

“Well I started playing before Tim, so these are things I’ve thought about for a long time, and I think one thing that I try to look at when I was a younger player, and I mean, in high school, junior college and Division I, I was always interested in seeing how guys talked in their interviews, talked about their faith, or didn’t talk about their faith. And then the reactions at times, I know Bob Costas at one point was critical about a player thanking Jesus Christ after a win, questioning what would happen if that player had lost, or do you really think God cares about winning and losing.

“I feel like my stance and my desire has always been to follow a quote from St. Francis of Assisi, who said, ‘Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.’ So basically, I’m not an over-the-top, or an in-your-face kind of guy with my faith. I would rather people have questions about why I act the way I act, whether they view it as positive or not, and ask questions, and then given an opportunity at some point, then you can talk about your faith a little bit. I firmly believe, just personally, what works for me, and what I enjoy doing is letting my actions speak about the kind of character that I want to have, and following that quote from St. Francis.”
