Bag of Randomness
- I wasn’t sure what to think of the Opening Ceremonies. I wasn’t a big fan of watching the transformation going from one ere to another, seeing men in top hats do something like the Macarena, and even though McCartney played and J.K. Rowling read, I was surprised that Elton John, Coldplay, and Adele wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
- As much as I like how the flame was lit with all those copper leaves from every nation, it’s a bit weird that it’s not up high where it can be seen from all around the city. As much as the residents of London have to put up with the games, they should at least be able to see the flame.
- There’s a lot of empty seats at the Olympics, and it’s not due to lack of interest, so there is now an inquiry about scandal.
- If you enjoyed the music during the Parade of Nations, you can download the tracks here or through iTunes. Two U2 songs made the track, with “Streets” being a new remix.
- Three athletes came to the Olympics under the Olympic flag, otherwise known as Independent Olympic Athletes, and they had a lot of fun during the Parade of Nations, as they should have. If one were to win gold, I wonder what song would be played? It would probably the Olympic anthem.
- Before the start of this Olympic games, 117 University of Texas Longhorns have won a medal (67/32/18). Twenty-one Longhorns are competing in London.
- After the men’s USA Basketball team played yesterday, everyone of them (including coaches) hugged the First Lady.
- “Mad Men” news . . . Peggy Olson will be back.
- Carolina Panther Steve Smith, who doesn’t have a connection to Colorado, has decided to donate $100,000 to help the victims of the movie shooting. Maybe some Colorado athletes should step up?
- Tim Tebow is one massively muscular quarterback, so here’s some eye-for the ladies. My apologies for you women of the faith that I just lead down the road to lust.
- Barry Bonds sure has lost a lot of weight.
- The Nebraska Cornhuskers have always had a traditional looking uniform, but they will try out a new uniform in which the player’s numbers on the font will display in the upper right and a gigantic “N” will display in the middle.
- French scientist’s device lets you write using just the movements of your eyes
- Jerry Jones, Daniel Snyder, and Magic Johnson all barefoot on Magic’s yacht.
- Katie Couric has a new talkshow and Sheryl Crow composed and sings the shows song.
- I have a feeling some of the most recent press releases from Billy Graham did not come from him, but from his son using his dad’s name to try to make a point.
- I’ve always wanted to take a long bike ride, so yesterday around 3:00 PM in the middle of the Texas heat I decided to ride to BibleScholarGeorge’s house . . . only to find he wasn’t home. From there, I road a bit here and there until I got back at home and saw my odometer read 21.68 miles.
- It’s kind of funny living in this area, because my journey took me from Lewisville, to Coppell, Irving, and then back again crossing two counties. It all sounds like a large area, but cities around here are pretty darn close.
- My brother-in-law does this cool thing that for each birthday he rides his age. Maybe I’ll be in good enough shape to do that one day. Shortly, I’ll be turning 37.

Forbes says Houston is the Coolest place to live
Houston is known for many things: Oil, NASA, urban sprawl and business-friendly policies. But the Texas city deserves to be known for something else: coolness.
The Bayou City may not be the first place you associate with being hip or trendy. But Houston has something many other major cities don’t: jobs. With the local economy humming through the recession, Houston enjoyed 2.6% job growth last year and nearly 50,000 Americans flocked there in response — particularly young professionals. In fact, the median age of a Houston resident is a youthful 33.
The result? Over the past decade, the dreary corporate cityscape has been quietly transforming. Stylish housing developments have popped up downtown, restaurants have taken up residence in former factories and art galleries like the Station Museum have been inhabiting warehouses.
Combine that with a strong theater scene, world-class museums and a multicultural, zoning-free mashup of a streetscape and you have the recipe for the No. 1 spot on Forbes’ list of America’s Coolest Cities To Live.
Other Texas cities on the list:
4 – Dallas
11 – San Antonio
13 – Fort Worth
19 – Austin
