Tempting picture/video of the day: Ring covered in human skin

The Forget Me Knot ring is mainly made of 24-carat gold, but instead of sporting a diamond or an emerald, it has a bit of human skin for embellishment. That skin came from a willing donor, the designer himself.

Recht had a 4 inch by 0.4 inch piece removed from his abdomen. The skin was tanned, complete with hair intact, and mounted to the ring. I think even Sauron would think twice about wearing it.

In case you’re concerned about the authenticity of your $470,000 human skin ring purchase, the buyer will received a DNA certificate and a DVD documentary of the whole process.

Pizza church

Capturepizaachurcchafasd

Pizza Church is an atmosphere where spirit and appetite come together. From the dawn of human civilization there has always been something special about the dinner table. The place where we satisfy our natural hunger is also a place where the dilemmas concerning the hungers of the human soul are explored. Around the dinner table, people investigate their lives as they interact with others. People share their joys and their pains, their failures and their successes, their thoughts and their desires. Around the dinner table is where people are people. Pizza Church exists for the glory of God to investigate the human experience and condition that God has authored. The solutions to the problems of life, as well as the satisfaction for the hungers of the human heart are found in the Holy Bible, God’s menu for life.

Bag of Randomness

  • In the past I’ve written about my admiration for pastor Adam Hamilton, and last week he was fortunate enough to preach at the National Prayer Service at the National Cathedral in front of the President and other important leaders of our country.  If you want to know what such an experience is like, he provides a small write up of his experience of being a guest and having decent seats at the inauguration, to sit in the presidential viewing stand during the parade, attending an inaugural ball, meeting the President and Vice President and their spouses, and what it’s like to preach to them.  You can watch the sermon here, which is just under 17-minutes.
  • One of WifeGeeding’s friends went to a local driving range and met Michael Phelps of all people.  I didn’t get confirmation on the actual driving range, but I wonder why he was in town.
  • I caught the documentary I Am Bruce Lee on Saturday.  At one point in the documentary, it’s stated that an Asian male has never had the romantic lead in any Hollywood picture (For you Dean Cain fans, he doesn’t count, he’s quarter-Asian and I think most folks consider him white).  Asian male actors have had the lead in action movies (Jet Li) and comedies (Jacki Chan), and in the past were often portrayed as cold, clumsy, or nerdy.  Even as a half-Asian, that part of the documentary really connected with me.  Growing up in a small town with very few Asians wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t always easy as kids would point out your slanted eyes and push that Asian male anatomy stereotype joke.  I’m not trying to make this a sob story or sound whiny, but to bring a bit of perspective about my life and how it would have been nice as a kid or teen, who got turned down by lots of girls for being ‘different’, to have a male Asian on the silver screen that I knew ladies found handsome.
  • Just to be fair to the girls of my small town, there were a respectful handful of them that did give me a shot, I was a very picky person.
  • I’m glad WifeGeeding can see past these things, that one eye does come in handy sometimes.
  • I’ve never seen a Bruce Lee flick, but after watching that documentary, I think I need to watch a few.
  • MomGeeding has forbidden me to watch any Brandon Lee (Bruce’s son) movie because DadGeeding had a heart attack while watching The Crow.  That heart attack happened just three days before my high school graduation.
  • WifeGeeding has been begging me to get some new jeans as many of mine have holes and aren’t ‘dark’ enough for fall wear. I’ve been dreading it because I always get frustrated at how tight they fit and seeing my waist size increase. I’d say for the past ten years I’ve bought nothing but a waist size 38 and for the last two years a size 40.  Well, I finally got the nerve to go jeans shopping and started for the regular 38’s, but took a risk and took about four different pair of various types and brands of 36 to the dressing room. To my surprise, not only did all of them fit, but none of them were snug, they were actually comfortable, not loose per se, but just a tad loose where they felt good to wear – and that was for all the different styles and brands. Usually I end up buying “baggy” or “loose”, which is very baggy, but this time I actually chose a slimmer “regular” fit, something I havent’ had the confidence to do in maybe a decade.  While that was a great feeling, my fear is that I lose progress and gain pounds again, but hopefully all these small changes I have made along the way is an actual change in lifestyle and I can keep going, and one day I can buy a pair of jeans of the size I wore in high school. For me, that’s a 34, but it would be sweet to fit in a pair of 32’s again.

  • I think it was about ten years ago when I really wanted to buy a 1GB thumb drive, but I was waiting for the price to drop to below $50.   Today you can get an 8GB thumb drive for as little as $6.   Now there’s a new way to store massive amounts of data using DNA of all things.  Today it costs about $12,400 to store a megabyte in DNA, and $220 to extract the information in readable form.  In the next five and ten years, I’ll like to see how popular this method becomes and how much the price will drop.
  • I only had to take one pain pill yesterday, hopefully today will be my first pain pill free day since the surgery.

Arizona bill would ask for loyalty oath at graduation

PHOENIX — Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would give Arizona high school seniors the option to recite a loyalty oath before they graduate.

Originally, House Bill 2467 would have made the oath a prerequisite for graduation from any public high school in the state. The Arizona Capitol Times reported the change Tuesday.

“To me it’s not a Republican bill, it’s not a Democrat bill, it’s an American bill,” said Rep. Steve Smith of Maricopa, one of the bill’s sponsors. “People feel that our high school kids that will be adults should understand their role as an American citizen.”

The oath, which would be pledged to the school principal, reads:

“I, _____, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose or evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge these duties; so help me God.”

If passed, HB 2467 would take effect starting in the 2013-14 school year.

I’m sure those last four words of the oath is going to gear up some debate, if not the whole thing.

Here’s the USA Today’s version of the story.
