Man left in solitary confinement for 2 years gets $15.5 million settlement

A man who spent 22 long months in solitary confinement in a New Mexico jail, neglected to the point where he was forced to pull out his own tooth because he said he wasn’t allowed to see a dentist, will receive $15.5 million for the ordeal.

The settlement with Dona Ana County, N.M., falls short of the $22 million that Stephen Slevin, 59, and his attorney had asked for, but is still one of the largest prisoner civil rights payouts in U.S. history.

Slevin’s story of inhumane treatment in the Dona Ana County Jail, where he was incarcerated from 2005 to 2007 — which he said included his toenails growing so long that they curled around his foot, and fungus festering on his skin because he was deprived of showers.

For Slevin — who has lung cancer and has beaten doctors’ odds for how long he would survive — the case was not about how much money he could make, his attorney said, but about getting recognition of how poorly he was treated and the scars he still has.

A Different Shade of Green

Disney’s The Great and Powerful Oz, a prequel to the Wizard of Oz comes out today.  The  iconic film we’re all familiar with is based on a Frank L. Baum book that’s in the public domain, however the movie is based on Baum’s characters are mainly the property of Warner Bros.

So I thought this was interesting when it came to copyright:

Striving for a visage different from the one Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch) made famous, Howard Berger, an Oscar-winning makeup artist, “was finally able to come up with a shade of green which satisfied Disney’s legal team,” SlashFilm.com reported after a visit to the set. According to Disney’s production notes Mr. Berger named his custom color Theostein — a conflation of the witch’s name before she turns wicked, and Frankenstein.

About 40 dwarfs were cast in “Oz the Great and Powerful” as Munchkins… They still have weird hair, but Disney lawyers nixed at least one style as too similar to one from the original movie. It was tweaked in postproduction using computers.

  • I had the weirdest dream last night.  I was at a pool party and Gov Good Hair was in attendance.  He only had his swim trucks on, which were of the very short variety, in a solid maroon print with white trim (showing his Aggie pride).  Surprisingly he had lot of back hair, and he refused to get in the water because he didn’t want to mess up his hair.
  • I’m not sure the Metroplex can handle the loss of Big Tex and Nolan Ryan in one calendar year.
  • I had dinner with an old friend last night at a restaurant of his choosing, those waitresses will write anything on your ticket to get good tip.
  • Another old friend was kind enough to send me a hand-written note that I got in the mail yesterday.  I wish I can be as kind and considerate as him.
  • WifeGeeding took a picture me and GirlGeeding making some sweets yesterday.  From her angle, I actually look pretty thin.  I also think I look like a half-Asian Dick Clark in that picture.
  • Sometimes WifeGeeding will make a good observation and I’ll reply back with “Good eye” without realizing the unintentional comedy.
  • I tend to get annoyed when people provide an answer or explain something an they end their sentence in “so . . . .”
  • I saw a story in which the remains of two unknown sailors on the USS Monitor were flown to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery today.  It’s amazing that they got to sail on one of the world’s first iron-clad warships, and even though they are dead, I wondered how amazed they would be to know they would be flying on a giant metal plane to their final resting place.
  • Our Congress needs wide representation of all backgrounds and different points of view, and it’s important for people like Sen Rand Paul to ask the questions he asked during his filibuster.
  • Here’s an article about the male lead actor on “The Americans”.  I didn’t know the guy was Welsh, which means he’s a Welsh man playing a Russian pretending to be American.

  • For you Beatles fans, you may like the documentary ‘Good Ol’ Freda‘ which will premier at SXSW.  It’s about the Beatles one and only secretary.  I didn’t know the band was together for just ten years, but she was their secretary for 11.  The film has support from the two remaining band mates and has been given the rights to use four of their songs.  Why is using the rights to one of their songs a big deal?  Well,  remember, “Mad Men” had to pay $250,000 to use just a part of “Tomorrow Never Knows” in one episode last season.
