Bag of Randomness

  • I heard that Arlington ISD is going to give excused absences for students that miss school because of the president’s speech.
  • Out of all the students that will stay at home because of the president’s speech, how many of them do you think will be white?
  • I wonder if parents held their kids back from school when Reagan and G.H.W. Bush spoke to students?  I’m not saying that liberals didn’t complain back then, I’m just wondering if parents actually held their kids back because the president was speaking.
  • One of the problems parents have with the speech is the optional supplemental material that the Department of Education made available.  One of the questions asked something to the effect of what can they do to help the president.  While watching ABC News last night, they showed a clip of G.H.W. Bush asking students to write him a letter on ways they can help him achieve “our goals.”
  • Heck, this lady even tears up at the idea of Obama speaking to her kids:
  • If you are a USAA member, you can now deposit your check via your iPhone using the camera on your phone and an app.
  • WifeGeeding and I took advantage of the free Chick-Fil-A sandwich promotion yesterday.  You wear a team t-shirt, you can walk in and get a sandwich.  We played it smart by avoiding the lunch crowed and just going for dinner.
  • It would be funny for a professional athlete to walk in wearing his or her jersey and getting a free sandwhich.  I can totally see Shaq or Martellus Bennet doing such a thing.
  • One good thing about KTCK 1310 The Ticket not being the official home of the Dallas Cowboys . . . the return of football theater.
  • Words that get tossed around too easily: cult, Nazi, Christian
  • I’ve had multiple readers tell me that BagOfNothing.com is discussed at their dinner table.  That just amazes me.
  • Twice this year WifeGeeding has left her credit card at a restaurant.  She is now grounded.
  • I watched a Frankenstein special on the History Channel over the long weekend.  Things I did not know . . . It was written by a woman, Mary Shelley.  And it was written when she was only eighteen.
  • When I was eighteen I drove to Abilene.
  • I also watched a George Washington special on the History Channel.  There is a lot of false information about him that many believe is true.
  • I’ve also been glued to the DIY (Do It Yourself) channel.  Two shows grab my attention.  There’s one where a contractor just roams around a hardware store and asks a random shopper if he can help them with their project, and then they go all out on the project surprising the shopper.   The other show just follows people who have no idea what they are doing as they try to work on a first time project all by themselves.
  • I also caught up on all my Defying Gravity episodes.  I really like that show, and like how they forecast future technology.
  • Funny Saturday night tweet:  The Mormons beat the Normans.
  • Everytime I see Sam Bradford, he looks like a fake Tiger Woods.
  • The field numbers in the new stadium were different when OU and BYU played.
  • And yet another Utah connection with the stadium – a Utah high school played a game there on Labor Day.
  • The city of Irving bought Lee Harvey Oswald’s old house.  Why?
  • 50 things that are being killed by the Internet
  • So much cooler than the Prius . . . the electric El Camino
  • Fantastic pictures of the California wildfires from The Big Picture
  • I was in Frys over the weekend and they had a big screen set up where you could watch movies in 3-D – with glasses of course.  I was pretty impressed, but wouldn’t want to wear those glasses all the time.
  • Since when does Miami and Florida State play so early in the season?
  • Laura Bush – A breath of fresh air

I just watched that Laura Bush video. The fact that she calmly and articulately defends her husband's tenure and also praises the current president really underlines the point that the current "outrage" is totally unreasonable and fueled by other factors.

During the last Cowboy home game I recall one of the announcers say that the Cowboys use different turf for college games…didn't say why.

I was wondering why Irving bought the old "Lee Harvey Oswald House" also. Actually, Oswald did not live there, but rather in a bording house in South Dallas. His estranged wife stayed there with a friend. Oswald slept over the night before the assasination and stored his rifle there.

I have the impression that some of these parents are more upset about the Obama "stay in school" speech than they would be if their kids' schools were labelled as low performing

The outcry over the President's actions really surprises me. If I were him, I'd make a speech to all of the people freaking out and just say "Shhh! I'M TRYING TO HELP YOU!" 🙂

The vehemence of the protests seems totally unreasonable to me, and seems to be mostly stirred up by the entertainers (née pundits) on TV and radio. It's hard not to psychoanalyze the protesters and see that they are people who for a long long time thought their worldview was the one in power, and who now realize that the world has changed around them. Like a child whose toy has been taken away, they're "throwing a fit", as it were.

I also think the current issue with the president's speech is silly. I don't remember the previous Bush's speech, but apparently there was an equal uproar over it.

I think it would be good if newspapers and media left out names and political parties when doing stories on political issues. At the end of the broadcast they could say which party was on each side. It might make people really think about the issue before deciding which side to support. It will never happen, but just something I think would be good.

Note: Don't waste your time trying to read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley… it's terrible… had to read it for on of my ap classes years ago…. she's pretty vague… there's no explanation of how he came to being… he really just APPEARED. The part about writing it when she was 18 isn't very impressive when you read it. Probably one of the worst books I've ever read…

The DIY channel will have an awesome new show on it this fall, I believe… I think it's called disaster house… One of my boyfriend's friends is the special effects coordinator for it. Basically, they destroy the house in wicked fashion, and show you how to fix different things by fixing them on a grand scale…

For example…cracks in the driveway –they dropped a car from 80 feet above the ground into the driveway, and then showed how to repour it, etc. (From what I understand)

They also took a flame thrower to the house, had a rock band with pyrotechnics perform in the kitchen, etc. It is apparently very well put together and the special effects are going to be awesome (but only cuz I've seen some of them already and I know the person behind them!)

You'll have to check it out!
