Church encourages texting during sermons
O’FALLON, MO. — The spotlight shone on the Rev. Mike Schreiner on Sunday as he preached about who goes to heaven and how earthly relationships will translate in the hereafter.
Off to Schreiner’s right, the steady glow of dozens of cell phones lit up the section where the teens of Morning Star Church sat listening to the sermon, thumbs furiously working little keyboards.
High above the 700-seat sanctuary, Amie Haskins, 27, the director of worship, sat in the church’s control booth receiving their text messages on the church’s cell phone. She screened out some (most were about whether pets would be in heaven — a point she knew Schreiner would be addressing later in the sermon), and typed others into a computer that was connected to Schreiner’s laptop next to him. During Schreiner’s 30-minute sermon, Haskins received 35 questions.
Schreiner answered just three of them, but the church’s embrace of texting — this was the third week of its experiment — has already improved the dialogue, according to Schreiner, and energized many of Morning Star’s younger members.
“I love it,” said 14-year-old Kailey Elfstrum, who had her text all ready to go even before Schreiner’s sermon began. “You get to ask the pastor anything you want while he’s talking.”

Archbishop condemns proposal to sterilize the poor
NEW ORLEANS — Roman Catholic Archbishop Alfred Hughes has denounced a lawmaker’s proposal to pay poor people to undergo sterilization as “an egregious affront to those targeted and blatantly anti-life.”
“Our lawmakers would do better to focus on policies that promote education and achievement to counteract poverty and the bigotry of low expectations, ” Hughes said in a statement Thursday.
Hughes spoke out in response to a proposal by state Rep. John Labruzzo, a Republican from suburban Metairie, to combat poverty by offering poor women and men $1,000 to undergo reproductive sterilization and vasectomies. In addition, the lawmaker said he is considering whether to propose tax incentives for college-educated people to have more children.

Turn gray hair dark again without an expensive trip to the salon or the use of chemical hair dyes. Make your own natural dye using brewed tea and herbs: Steep 3 tea bags in 1 cup boiling water. Add 1 tablespoon each of rosemary and sage (either fresh or dried) and let it stand overnight before straining. To use, shampoo as usual, and then pour or spray the mixture on your hair, making sure to saturate it thoroughly. Take care not to stain clothes. Blot with a towel and do not rinse. It may take several treatments to achieve desired results.

This latest assessment has been specifically designed around the results of your previous examinations.
It is a multiple-choice exam and aims to determine your suitability for a number of departments within the Dharma Initiative.
Additionally, a select group of talented recruits have contributed to this examination. The outstanding efforts of these individuals stand as an example to us all.

In the meantime, I urge all recruits to avoid contact with the material being distributed by ‘Black Swan’. The integrity of the entire Volunteer Recruitment program is at risk.

Bag of Randomness
- If I were Mark Cuban rich, I would sooooooo have an ICEE machine in my house.
- Oh, how I miss Tim Russert right now.
- I am now dumber for watching Knight Rider the other night. I didn’t intent to watch it, it just happen to be the next show on after whatever we were watching. I don’t mind the campy acting, that’s to be expected, but when the car actually starts to transform in a completely unrealistic way, I can’t believe what they are trying to sell me. At least the original show kept the realm of realism into play.
- The first 15 minutes of that show was soooo absurd. Somehow KITT, guy, and girl make this escape and some sort of heat seeking missile hits KITT, and not only does KITT survive but the missile had some sort of special chemical engulfed KITT in flames and continued to burn and heat up the inside no matter how fast KITT was driving down the road. In order to stay alive, guy and girl had to strip down to keep their bodies cool until KITT would go into some kind of vacuum chamber to suck out all the oxygen to extinguish the flames. It was like the writers were just trying to find an excuse to show some skin . . . not that I’m totally complaining about that.
- However, that girl in the lead role could be the best looking thing on television. Feel free to Google her, Deanna Russo is her name.
- I noticed a lot of background noise during Bush’s address to the nation the other night, as if someone in the background was moving stuff.
- I didn’t realize that the Commission of Presidential Debates has only been around since 1987.
- Finally . . . Survivor is in HD.
- Ray Boltz has updated his website.
- Sarah Palin swimsuit competition video if you are interested.
- I noticed that the comics on Yahoo! Comics that I read (Luann is my favorite) are now in color. I prefer the black and white.
- I watched the University of Texas and Arkansas game Saturday, and during the game you see commercials from each university. UT sure is lucky to have an alum like Walter Cronkite to do the voice over.
- Cronkite turns 92 this November.
- His voice also introduces Katie Couric for the CBS Evening News.
- I’m so thankful that I’m not a North Korean, I mean, have you seen their video arcades?

- I’ve noticed how all documentaries now a days turn certain objects in still pictures 3-D’ish.
- I don’t like reading websites using RSS feeders. I understand why many do, but I simply prefer checking out the websites themselves.
- After watching the Amazing Race, I now know three people named Starr, but I haven’t met any of them.
- The Cowboys lost, which means this will be a long work week.
- Looking at the box score, Dallas running back only rushed 8 times. Actually, all those rushes came from Marion Barber. Felix Jones didn’t get one carry, what’s up with that?
- I think I’m going to the State Fair this weekend with my best friends. I only have been once, but didn’t get to check out any cool stuff like the car show because of a concert.
- I’ve been on a Michael Buble kick as of late, which lead me to this thought . . . if he and Norah Jones had a child I bet that kid would be on heck of a crooner.

Pastors to defy IRS
During sermons this Sunday, some 35 pastors across the country will tell their congregations which presidential candidate they should vote for, “according to the Scriptures.”
Their endorsements represent a direct challenge to federal tax law, which prohibits tax-exempt organizations from engaging in partisan political activity.
The clergy have embraced that risk, hoping their actions will trigger an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service, which would then enable a Christian legal advocacy group to take the IRS to court and challenge the constitutionality of the ban.

Man charged after allegedly passing gas toward cop
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A West Virginia man who police said passed gas and fanned it toward a patrolman has been charged with battery on a police officer.
Jose A. Cruz, 34, of Clarksburg, was pulled over early Tuesday for driving without headlights, police said. According to the criminal complaint, Cruz smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and failed three field sobriety tests before he was handcuffed and taken to a police station for a breathalyzer test.
As Patrolman T.E. Parsons prepared the machine, Cruz scooted his chair toward Parsons, lifted his leg and “passed gas loudly,” the complaint said.
Cruz, according to complaint, then fanned the gas toward the officer.
“The gas was very odorous and created contact of an insulting or provoking nature with Patrolman Parsons,” the complaint alleged.
He was also charged with driving under the influence, driving without headlights and two counts of obstruction.
Cruz acknowledged passing gas, but said he didn’t move his chair toward the officer nor aim gas at the patrolman. He said he had an upset stomach at the time, but police denied his request to go to the bathroom when he first arrived at the station.
“I couldn’t hold it no more,” he said.
