Bag of Randomness for Monday, June 29, 2020

I have this crazy ability not to be able to find the remote or my phone when either is right next to me. It’s not that they are misplaced, I know they are somewhere within arm’s reach because I recently used them, I just can’t find them. It’ll get to the point that I use my hands to feel the area all around me only to stand up and find the object, right next to me, and then I sit down in defeat.

Saturday was the 22nd anniversary of my father’s death. I did the math, and come this April 24, I will have lived more days with my father being dead than alive.

As I expected, my COVID-19 test result came back negative.

Texas Republicans move forward with plans for an indoor convention in Houston, the state’s biggest coronavirus hot spot

Gov. Greg Abbott is allowing limits on outdoor crowds — but not indoor gatherings. His party’s convention — with an expected attendance of 6,000 — so far will not require attendees to wear face masks.

WifeGeeding’s father and brother killed a 400-pound alligator on their property this weekend. The only place that had a scale large enough to weigh it was the local fertilizer plant.

A small update on the renovation of the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells.

Planets and dwarf planets to scale in size, rotation speed and axial tilt (in order of distance from the Sun).

FAQ: the tilts would ordinarily be all upright in a perfect system because dust and gas all orbited the same way in the early solar system. However, impacts by giant asteroids/planetesimals during this time will tend to modify that, in addition to planetary migration. Impacts to Uranus have been simulated by scientists here and please stop smirking about this sentence.

    1. Mighty big gator. Was there a ticking alarm clock in its belly?

    2. I thought Uranus would be smaller.

    3. Glad your COVID test was negative. (unless it was a false negative – some testing facilities have been a little sloppy) Hoping the best for you and the family.

    4. Big news in your hometown this morning: the Governor is backing the state legislature runoff candidate opposed by Empower Texas. Governor Abbott has come out strongly for Dr Glenn Rogers and against the fracking fortune son-in-law, Jon Francis. Could swing the election away from Empower Texas. Major happening.

    • Geeding says:

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I don’t understand the whole Empower Texas thing. I think they are a bunch of super-far-right conservatives with a lot of money, and they have criticized Abbot a lot? I think they have been caught saying some stuff and have had to apologize and lost some of their influence? I’m also a bit embarrassed that when you referenced Jon Francis my first thought was of the now jailed founder of GGW, Joe Francis, and was trying to figure out how did I not know he has MW roots.

  2. RPM says:

AFAIK Empower Texans is far, far right. I’m not inclined to follow them.

Good to see progress on The Baker, but I’m skeptical on it’s long term success. Mineral Wells just doesn’t have the tourist attraction/value it used to and I-20 didn’t help. Fort Wolters closing sealed the deal. I get the nostalgia and wanting to preserve The Baker, but it just doesn’t seem financially viable from a tourist POV. What do you do after you’ve had a spa? Possum Kingdom or The Dog House? That’s not what you would call a draw for the price they are going to charge per room.

They are going to have to develop an entertainment venue. It doesn’t have to be big, but it has to be top quality intimate seating for quality entertainment. It has to be a well known performer. Local acts won’t cut it. It will be a huge loss until it finally becomes a draw, but it could definitely become a draw. Problem is will backers be able to ride out low tide? Top notch food will have to be part of the deal, too. I really hope The Baker makes a comeback, I just doubt the economics of it happening without some miracle marketing program.

RIP to your Dad. He sounds like a good man from what what I’ve read (limited to your blog). I’m kind of surprised he and my great uncle never met (or maybe they did). Uncle Carl was a civilian electrician at Ft. Wolters until he retired. He and Aunt Gladys lived near the Jr. High, but I can’t remember the street name. I’m sure if your Dad was involved with groups like the VFW they met at some point, and maybe my Dad as well.

  3. Bizarro Big Tex says:

The Dog House? RPM, I always knew you had good taste. ha.

Agree with your analysis of the Baker Project 100%. I hope for a happy redevelopment success when the re-build is done, but it will take deep pockets and a serious cash flow to keep that majestic old facility afloat.

I had a similar experience with the memory of my Father this year. May 14th marked the halfway point for me. Later this month will mark the 22nd anniversary of his passing.
