- Ever since I’ve seen the HBO ‘Real Sports’ feature on how Nepalese Sherpas carry all the gear (sometimes ridiculous items like tables and chairs) and how much the landscape has changed, this feat doesn’t impress me anymore – I’ve Climbed Everest 21 Times. It’s Not the Mountain It Used to Be.
Thanks for posting the article on Everest. That was eye opening. I’ve been fascinated with Everest since seeing an IMAX documentary about climbing it several years ago and that fascination was rejuvenated when I read Into Thin Air. The current crisis with overcrowding is disheartening. I was disappointed in the Hardline (The Ticket) interviewing a climber from Dallas a few weeks that summited on one of the days made infamous by the traffic jam photo that circulated in May. She was obviously someone that had no business being there. She said that she only decided a few months prior to attempt the climb and did very little training. She also said that she had a very foggy memory of the summit day because she was so exhausted and stated that her Sherpa was dragging her up the final hours of the summit.
