  • Because of a typo I made yesterday, I thought I’d provide a link to a blog about cement. I’ve got a blog about nothing, they got a blog full of cement.
  • Cowboys center Travis Frederick has been diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. Whenever the story is mentioned on the radio or television, I think of JonBenet Ramsey because they sound somewhat similar, at least to me.
  • I only follow a handful of pastors on Twitter, most I know personally. I’ve noticed they mainly tweet scripture or stuff about scripture. I’m also aware they get all sorts of advice and everyone tells them how to do their job. So this is my passive-aggressive attempt to encourage them to include more candid tweets so they can be more relatable. I’m not saying they should use Twitter as a form of stand-up comedy, a political sounding board, or log every detail of their life. I just want to be able to find them relatable, to know they have a personality, that they are human and have a life outside of the church or ministry.
  • Elon Musk recently gave a tour of a Tesla Factory. I thought it was interesting how he spoke about the limitations of robots on the assembly line and the need for human intervention at certain points.
  • Christians are called to be Christ-like. If Jesus was alive today in human form, I’m certain he would drive an automobile, perhaps a Prius, but he would always use his turn-signal properly. In that spirit, be Christ-like in your driving habits, especially if you have a KLTY bumper sticker – drive “safe for the whole family.”
  • I’m not really looking forward to the Top Gun sequel, it will never live up to my expectations. However, it has caught my attention since I found out along with Tom Cruise it will have Val Kilmer, Ed, Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Lewis Pullman (son of Bill Pullman. Miles Teller Teller plays the son of Maverick’s late friend and partner Goose, which makes me wonder if they can get Meg Ryan to make a cameo. Cast her now or lose her forever.
  • Texas Gulf Coast exports more oil than it imports for the first time
    • Texas is now on track to produce more oil than either Iran or Iraq. That would make Texas No. 3 in the world if it were a country.
    • Texas is the epicenter of the shale revolution, with soaring production in the oil-rich Permian Basin leading the United States to record output. Rapid technological advances in fracking, the process of unlocking oil and gas deep underground, have dramatically reduced the cost to drill oil in the Permian Basin.

  • Military experts say Iran’s new fighter jet is actually a US plane from the 1970s
  • New Raiders stadium in Las Vegas will include jail and courthouse
  • Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick agrees to a debate — with Geraldo Rivera
    • After refusing to go toe-to-toe with his general election opponent, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick agreed Thursday to debate television personality Geraldo Rivera over immigration and the murder of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts.

    – I saw yesterday that Ed Harris will also be in Top Gun 2 – that list of actors is long, but distinguished.
    – It looks like Iran is flying the Mig-28, I wonder if it can do a 4G negative dive.

    • Geeding says:

Dangit, that’s a huge mistake. I should be flying rubber dog poop out of Saigon (Yes, I botched the quote purposely). I can’t believe I left Ed Harris out, he was one of the main reasons why I wanted to mention it. That has been corrected.

    • Mike Honcho says:

re: Mig 28… The data on the MIG is inaccurate.

That’s certainly an honorable standard you have set for yourself, but I respectfully (gosh, that sounds formal and argumentative) say lighten up, it’s a tweet and not a sermon. Pastors have an almost impossible standard to live up to, always in the spotlight and in the eyes of many, a moral or rule enforcer. I suppose principals are also in a similar situation. Y’all can come across as intimidating. I want a pastor (and a principal, for that matter) to show me you are relatable and don’t have to be so serious all the time and that I can let my guard down around you. I’m certainly not saying any pastor should lower his or her standards. I think asking yourself if every Tweet is prudent or righteous makes you sound like a fuddy-dud. 🙂 Adam Hamilton tweeting about going to the zoo with his grandkids or bummed the Royals lost in the ninth aren’t prudent or righteous tweets (at least to me), but they let me know he’s human and I can relate to similar things of everyday life. You have convictions and high standards in how you communicate and you should do what you feel led to do, you don’t need to water down your message, I just think many of my pastoral friends overlook a useful tool to relate and connect to their congregation. I certainly prefer how you choose to use the social media platform compared to the likes of Robert Jeffress and Franklin Graham. So, keep on keeping on.

I attend a large, multi-campus church (not anywhere near Fellowship or Gateway in numbers) and our lead pastor is one of my favorite follows on Twitter. He has a style that’s very similar to what you describe – a healthy balance of posts on spiritual matters and church events mixed with some sports, current events, and comedy (he retweeted NotKenny Rogers recently). Email me if you want to see a good example. I follow another local pastor that is similar on Twitter. I agree that it does make him very relatable and it is very reflective of his equally relatable preaching style.

By the way, I think a carpenter like Jesus would probably find a pickup much more convenient than a Prius. Where’s he going to put all of his tools?

    • Geeding says:

Coach, that is an excellent point I cannot counter. However, in my mind, he’s driving around in an old El Camino which has been modified with a hybrid engine.

      • John Mackovic says:

That does sound pretty cool. Can you fit a couple of sheets of plywood in the back of one?

I’m glad we’ve finally answered the age-old question – WWJD?
