Bag of Randomness for Thursday, May 10, 2018

  • I’ve never known my father to play the guitar yet I found a picture of him playing a guitar. He said he used to sing lead for a band on riverboats on the Ohio River and played the clarinet in high school, but other than that I never knew him to be musically inclined. Hmm, now that I look at the picture again, there’s a small chance that might not be my dad and I’ve mistaken him because his head is tilted down. Either way, I found some space to fill up today’s post. Win/Win.
  • My back is still getting better, not very rapidly, but it’s getting better and so is my attitude.
  • WifeGeeding, a preschool director, received an email from a mother about her child’s bathroom issues. The parent recently moved from another non-English speaking country. The email used the word “shit” probably a half a dozen times. We’re thinking she used a translation app that didn’t translate all that well.
  • Man, this final season of FX’s ‘The American’s’ is just great. Everything is coming together, and last night’s episode was solid and gritty. That parking garage scene was tense, and I loved how they decided just to use silence instead of trying to find the right song or score to aid the storytelling.
  • As much as I may not like President Trump’s personality, morals, or politics, one thing is for certain, I won’t underestimate the guy. That may be his greatest strength, people think he will automatically fail, and that’s how he won primaries, the nomination, and the Electoral College.
  • I don’t watch the Fox4 morning show, but it will now start a half-hour earlier, 4:00 AM. I’m curious to know how the morning staff first reacted to that and when such a change in working hours happen, how is that handled in terms of pay and salary.

  • If you are a lawyer operating a blog out of Wise County don’t read the rest of this bullet point because it will be nails on a chalkboard for you… If you a looking for a Father’s Day present for the local BBQ lover in your life, the Birthright BBQ Fest will be held on that day. It’s a chance for the folks who never get a chance to travel to Austin to try Franklin’s, and local great Cattleack will also be there.
    • Beer comes from Four Corners Brewing Co. Other pitmasters expected at Birthright, according to the website, are Brent Reaves of Smokey John’s BBQ in Dallas; Patrick Feges of Feges BBQ in Houston; Evan LeRoy of LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue in Austin; and Elliott Moss of Buxton Hall in Asheville, North Carolina.

  1. Bizarro Big Tex says:

Not a big fan of the accuracy of some drug tests. Some years back a new employer called me in when my random test flagged for opiates. Very high level of opiates. In conversation, I shared that I loved poppy seed muffins, bagels, and rolls. Had something with poppy seeds at every meal. Did a follow-up test with better methodology and received a clean bill of health and an apology. Have not trusted drug tests since. Depends on the quality of the lab and its processes. Some companies terminate after a false positive without ever talking to the employee to see if it is true. Bad juju.
