  • DaughterGeeding is a voracious reader and started to ask about the meaning of a lot of words. To my surprise, she’s never used a dictionary, so we had some father-daughter time. I know she could just ask Siri or Alexa, but I thought it was best to teach her some old school fundamentals. She finds the dictionary fascinating, so much so she takes it to bed to read at night.
  • Regarding my upcoming surgery, WifeGeeding and I are having a logistical disagreement. It’s on a Friday and I have to check in at 6:00 AM when the kids usually wake up for school, with surgery scheduled for 7:30 AM. Friday is a school day and we need to get the kids to school later that morning, the earliest we can drop them off is 7:15 AM. I told her the most logical thing to do is for me to simply take an Uber or a Lift to the hospital by myself and she can take the kids to school and visit me after the surgery. The issue isn’t getting someone to take the kids to school, but having someone around to watch over and help them get ready for school. I already feel like I’m inconveniencing her and don’t want to trouble anyone else with the kids. There’s nothing WifeGeeding can really do if she’s with me at the hospital anyway. I’ve been with both my mother and father for many medical procedures and know the toll it can take just sitting there waiting and not being able to do anything other than sit and wait. I don’t need the emotional support and I’ll be taken care of by professionals. She, on the other hand, wants to find someone to help with the kids and be with me at the hospital before I’m wheeled to the operating room.

  1. Bizarro Big Tex says:

Keith – The best of luck to you on Friday. Let the Wife make arrangements for the kids to be helped by friends/relatives that day so she can be with you at the surgery center. The Human Psyche is a powerful force in health and healing. Her presence from check-in to departure for home will help you immeasurably, even if you cannot quantify it. Plus, it deepens the bond between you two. The whole “in sickness and in health” thing. The face of your life’s love being the last thing you see when you go under and the first thing you see when you later wake up is a wonderfully calming thing that gives you strength and peace in a high stress situation. Again, hope all goes well. We need you back on that Blog Wall, as Colonel Jessup would say.

What Bizarro Big Tex said. You may not think she needs to be there, but she thinks it is important. Let her be there, she needs it. Good luck with the surgery. As I told a friend facing the same surgery, the most common response of my friends after the surgery is “Why did I wait so long?” She now says the same.

I have a memory from elementary school of being shown how to look things up in a dictionary. One suggestion was to consider the alphabet before even picking up the book. If your word starts with W (for instance) you should open it toward the end. If it starts with B, open toward the beginning. I don’t know why that stuck with me over the years (I’m 48). But it is a good example of planning and being efficient.
I’m glad you got that moment with DaughterGeeding 🙂

From a woman’s perspective, I agree with Bizzaro, you may not need it but she does.will be praying for your upcoming surgery.

  5. Ben W. says:

Count me amongst those urging you to have your wife with you from start to finish. She can provide a steadying force for you (regardless of how calm and confident you will/may feel), and you can provide reassurance for her. Plus, she can take video of you acting loopy after they give you a pre-surgery Valium, and then you can share that with us when you make your triumphant return. It’s a partnership, and your partner wants to stand by her man. There’s no shame (and it’s definitely not an inconvenience) to have her do that.

  6. JayF says:

Hope all goes well and I’m sure it will. Yes, your wife wants to be there for the same reason you would be there if the roles were reversed, she cares!

Touching Cotton (verb) touch·ing, come so close to (an object) as to be or come into contact with it.

    (sorry, sorry…couldn’t resist)

  7. Highland Park Boy says:

Wives are usually correct, and yours is in this case. It’s your day.

  8. Peggy says:

Don’t make me come up there for a talk…….yes, Kelsey should be there. You may not know it now, but you will be glad a friendly face is there when the meds wear off….. the professional folks taking care of you have a vested interest in the procedure they are performing and subsequent care, but Kelsey is far more invested in you and your care starting from the time you enter that hospital.
Oh, and I applaud Highland Park Boy.. wise man, wise, indeed….. Prayers for you and Kelsey and the kids.
