Bag of Randomness for Thursday, December 7, 2017

  • The deadline for renewing website hosting for this little blog has passed. As you probably guessed, I renewed it, for two years. I forgot I actually host two websites on that account. The other website is one I manage for a memorial scholarship I’m fortunate to be a part of, so I needed to renew to keep the scholarship website up and running. Many of you provided feedback either in comments or emails on what this little bag of nothing means to you and how often you read it. I was surprised many loyal visitors don’t visit daily, just a few times a week, though several of you say this is part of your morning routine. With that in mind, I’ll continue to blog as long as I don’t feel like it’s burdening me or distracting me from family, so it might not be as consistent or as lengthy as you are accustomed.
  • In other BagOfNothing news, I changed the comment settings for this blog. As an experiment, I’m navigating from the IntenseDebate tool I was using. You’ll now see a different display for leaving a comment. An email field displays but you can leave it blank.  I’m not begging for comments and I don’t want to create a hotbed of negativity, but leave a comment every now and then so I know someone is out there.
  • Each month Google Maps will send me data on my travels. That might alarm some folks but I don’t mind. In November, I visited seven cities, visited 32 places (3 of them new), and spend a total of 28 hours in a vehicle.
  • First Lady Melania Trump ate at Whataburger yesterday.
  • If you are a fan of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, the Columbia clothing company has a new overpriced Echo Base Collection that’s pretty cool. The collection doesn’t include a Tauntaun Sleeping Bag but you can buy one here.  It may smell bad but it’ll keep you warm until Han gets the shelter up.
  • How Mark Hamill wanted ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to end
    • But he told Abrams, “Instead of Finn and Rey coming and almost saving Han, what if it’s Leia and I?” He continued, “She’s about to be abducted by two costume guards, one guard turns to the other guard, shoots the guard, takes off his helmet and it’s me! That I did get her message. I said, No. 1, it’s a hell of an entrance, No. 2, it’s misdirection … We’re [also] back on a Death Star, very similar! We rush to his aid, we don’t alter what you want to do, but if we witness Han dying, that has so much emotional resonance that will carry into the next film.”
  • WFAA’s Brett Shipp resigns to run for Congress
  • Usually, I’m uncomfortable watching people fail or get hurt and people laughing at them, but I guess this is an exception – Digg – We Can’t Stop Watching These Competitive Diving Fails
  • The Trailer For ‘Black Mirror’ Season 4 Has Officially Dropped
  • Some of you may remember my college friend, Allyson, who died from cancer. Sadly, I found out another college friend, a sorority sister and member of her graduating class, is fighting a very aggressive form of cancer. I’m not close to her, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care and reflect on her kindness and realize how fast, unpredictable, fragile, and precious life is.
  • I love how the Lewisville Fire Department will send a firetruck down every street with a Santa on top throwing candy as lights and sirens go off each year. They even send out a link to a Santa Tracker website so you know if they are getting close. It’s a small little thing, but it brings a lot of joy to everyone in the neighborhood, even the adults.

  1. Charles Jones says:

I read your blog, and Barry’s blog every morning. I read two, that is it. Your part of my morning routine. Thanks for all you do. Merry Christmas, Geeding.

  2. David says:

    I read you every day.
Where is the Roosevelt ‘Day of Infamy’ draft kept?

    • Geeding says:

I don’t normally link the top image to a website, but today’s image was linked to the National Archives which has an accompanying story. Here’s the answer I think you are looking for:

Today, NARA’s Center for Legislative Archives at the National Archives Building holds both the Senate reading copy (Record Group 46) and another copy, virtually identical to the Senate copy but typed separately, in the House records (Record Group 233). The final “as given” version, with changes made by the President during delivery, is held by the Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York.

UPDATE 12-2-2016: Since this article was written, an investigation by the Roosevelt Library and the Center for Legislative Archives in 2014 confirmed that the “reading copy” remains a missing document. Neither the House copy nor the Senate copy, both doubled-spaced typewritten, is the “reading copy” that President Roosevelt used while speaking, the investigation concluded.

  3. Gary says:

You’ve been part of my morning for years now. While I’d hate to see you go, I used to have a site and I know what a drag it can turn into so I certainly understand.

  4. David B. says:

I’m a daily reader but get it over feedly. Not sure if that is reflected in your stats or not.

  5. Veronica says:

I love to read your blog every morning and I usually learn something new each day. Thank you!

  6. Darla says:

I’m a daily reader and enjoy following your blog. I never comment, I have nothing to share.

  7. barry says:

So glad you’re in for another couple of years, Keith, as I always look forward to the BAG. Here’s to the randomness to come!

  8. Mr. Mike Honcho says:

Always a pleasure to read your blog. I comment sometimes, but read it daily.

Great pic at the top, BTW.

  9. JF says:

I read you and Green Bean everyday…Love yours, hate his, but still read em both….Would def understand if you didn’t post as often. As I’ve told you before, I do a Monday Morning Ramblings once a week to a select twitter following and it gets to be a hassle, I can’t imagine trying to find the time and the material 5 days a week, all year. Do what you are comfortable with my good man!

    • Geeding says:

Finally, a man that understands how hard it is to get material for this thing! 😉 There’s a certain standard I want to bring to this blog and there are days where I’m struggling and feel bad for posting crud because I’m wasting people’s time.

  10. Alec666 says:

I’m so glad you will continue writing this blog. Now my young sons also will read it once in a while. Last night my youngest read about putting Oreo down, he was touched (he’s a dog lover). On my vacations I always take time to read your blog, so I’m one of those that show as visiting from Washington DC, Paris or Rome.

  11. Jason says:

I visit almost daily. I really enjoy the variety of stuff you link to. But as others have said, I’d certainly understand if you called it quits. I’ve tried and failed to maintain a daily blog. It’s a lot of work!

  12. AndreaJN says:

I visit almost every weekday and enjoy your take on the world. Wishing you and all your Geedings Happy Holidays!

LOVE Black Mirror, so thanks for that update!

  13. Bryan says:

Daily reader and I try to remember to comment as often as possible. I wake up every night (thank you, older age) and, if it happens to be after 1am, I’ll always read it before I fall back asleep. Unfortunately, that means that I often forget to go back and comment on something later on in the day.

  14. Kathy says:

I read your blog and Liberally Lean every day on Feedly. I enjoy it and learn a lot.
