Bag of Randomness for Tuesday, June 27, 2017

  • Now that the new neighbors have moved in, I thought I’d provide photographic evidence for all those who thought I made up the story of the NFL lineman (now retired) who mowed sans shirt. If you were curious about the house itself, here’s the listing. And for some reason, the realtor decided to make a video of the house set to music that would accompany certain scenes on a late night Cinemax movie.
  • I’ve been sick the last couple of days. Maybe my memory is a little foggy, but as a kid, rebounding from an illness was rather quick and being ill wasn’t so painful and uncomfortable. That doesn’t seem to be the case as an adult.
    • Sometimes I think it would be nice to be sick, to take a day off work and catch up on television or watch some movies. But the reality is as a sick adult, you just can’t get comfortable and are so spent you don’t want to invest any mental energy in anything – even watching television.
    • I think this was the worst case of body aches and headaches I ever had. Toss in a sore throat and infected sinuses and I had a real swell time.
    • When I get sick like this, I can’t help but think how much of a wimp I am. I’m sure my ancestors pushed through a lot worst things because they had to to make a living and support their loved ones. I’m also thankful I have access to modern medicine.
  • I’m a political and news junkie, but I’m even fatigued by everything going on.
  • The other day DaughterGeeding didn’t want to get something done because it was sprinkling outside. Trying to think of a quick analogy, I kidded her “Do you think the Egyptians stopped building the pyramids because of a little rain?” She shut me down rather quickly by telling me it was the Jews who build the pyramids.
  • What was Doc Brown more shocked at? Being told in 1955 that Ronald Reagan would be the President of the United States or discovering Donald Trump would become became president? Or another way to phrase that and keeping with the 30-year rule, how shocking would it be to be told in 1987 that Trump would be president?

It's 2017. If you want to throw some background music behind a video to sell a house, there are a million better options that soft-core jazz. That's a horrific choice, but at least I got a good laugh from it.

The older I get, the worse being sick gets. Not only are the physical symptoms more bothersome, but the mental issues of having to deal with work are, too. Fortunately, I haven't had any sort of catastrophic illness where I've been completely incapacitated for a significant length of time. But that also means that, when I've been "sick," I've also had to keep up with things. I don't have the type of job that you can just walk away from for a few days and pick back up when you return. As a result, there is a near-constant pressure to make sure nothing gets missed. So true "sick" days (or even vacation days) where I have the luxury of not dealing with e-mail or thinking about work are an impossibility. That is immensely taxing, and it's a really crappy part of being a grownup.

Re: News Fatigue – It's pretty bad now. Clicks and views are money, so the more enticing the better. So every political issue, even very tiny ones become major events. The "volume is turned to 11" all the time. Was like that during the Obama presidency. Is like that during the Trump presidency.

Re: Doc Brown – good point. But I also think he would have felt familiar with a Trump Presidency considering he had seen what happened when Biff was running things…

So, was he the type of neighbor that you will keep in touch with after he moves?
