I had the exact same thought as I was watching this on TV. Nearly every person it showed in the crowd had a phone/device up recording. Why?? There will be hundreds of better quality images of this moment taken from a better angle than you can hope of getting. Is there some feeling of ownership after having captured the moment yourself? Do any of these people go back and watch/view any of this more than a handful of times?

Obviously, it's perplexing to me. I suspect it's a social media thing. Now all of these people can post on Vine or Twitter of Facebook or Instagram and #humblebrag about seeing history. Except they didn't see it. They saw it through a 3.5" screen.

I bought a video camera when my oldest son was born. I taped events, parties, until one day I came to the realization that I was not "enjoying the moment" I was instead concern with the intricacies of filming. I went home, put the recorder away and it has not seen the light of day since.

I came to the same realization after we watched some old home movies of Christmas. I had recorded the entire process of everyone opening presents, which makes for an incredibly dull video. But everyone was laughing and having a good time, while I was intently trying to "capture the magic." Realizing I had already missed several Christmases, birthdays, etc. doing this, I resolved to stop.

I still film, but in short bursts of 30 seconds or so, and only for a small portion of the event. We're at a point in history where virtually all of our waking moments could be recorded for posterity, but we're still too dumb to realize that no one cares.
