TOLEDO – It’s a rivalry that is older than most of us, but for the Bowling Green Falcons, it’s about taking care of each other.

In the midst of Toledo’s water crisis, Bowling Green State University’s athletic office stepped up to come to the aid of their rivals, the University of Toledo Rockets.

Rocket football players began practice Sunday, and since Toledo remains under a no drink, no boil water advisory, the folks down I-75 in Bowling Green made sure the students athletes had plenty of water.

As the story goes, when UT reached out to BG to ask if the Falcons could help load the Rockets up on water, the Falcons welcomed them with open arms. The Rockets sent players and a van full of empty water jugs down I-75. Once they arrived at BGSU, they found plenty of Falcons waiting with water hoses, ready to fill them up.

“This is a crisis situation and it’s about making sure the kids have water,” said Alfred Castillo, Assistant AD for Sports Medicine at BGSU. “It’s not about the rivalry right now.”

Castillo said he simply hopes that if his team were in the same situation, the favor would be returned. “In sports medicine, we have to make sure we stay safe and healthy.”
