  • I’m not a fan of this current trend of wearing crazy and colorful socks, especially with dress clothes.
  • Jimmy Fallon seems like the happiest person in America.  He did a heck of a Robin Williams impression last night and had a ‘House of Cards’ skit with a surprise guest that I thought was pretty clever.  I don’t want to give any of it away, but the skit should be available on his YouTube channel.

  • I’ve been in the doldrums for the last ten days or so.  Unfortunately it’s starting to show as four-year-old DaughterGeeding grabbed my hand and said, “Daddy, you like kinda sad or maybe kinda mad.  What’s wrong, is there something I can do?”  I think a lot of it has to deal with this week being my late mother’s birthday and I’m just kind of reminiscing about things.  Now that I think about it, the first two weeks of August contains the birthdays of both of my late parents and my late best friend.
  • The problem with depression is that the more depressed you are, the more you feel like your problems are pathetic and not worth anybody’s time.  The times when you are capable of asking for help, you’re at your least worst, and so you feel like you’re exaggerating or attention seeking. – Source (Reddit)

Regarding the quote you heard in church. Our pastor once used the phrase "we don't serve to convert, we serve because we have been converted"

I really enjoy Fallon's show. It's the only late-night show that I've watched in the last 6-7 years. He's infectiously happy, a good musician, and Higgins is brilliant. He also has a great writing staff, as some of the bits they do (like the House of Cards & Breaking Bad parodies) are superb.

That's a great quote re: loving others. In an effort to simplify, my spiritual focus for the past few months has been Matthew 22:36-40 – loving God with all my heart/mind/soul, and loving others as myself. Everything else depends on that.

You may already know this, but about 10% of the people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) – which is most commonly associated with winter depression – are affected during the summer. I know you mentioned that you have other things going on during early August that can contribute to your feelings, but don't discount that it could also be partly attributed to SAD. I mention it because I've had some issues during the summer in the past, and my doctor brought this up. I was surprised, because it seems a bit counter-intuitive.

On that note, I've seen links posted to the Buzzfeed article several places over the past few days. Between the news of Robin Williams and some other issues, I just can't handle looking at it. I'm just going to have to trust that it's powerful and moving. Maybe next week…

I can't pretend to understand long-term depression, as I can really only identify 2-3 times in my life in which I was suffering from situational depression. But my heart goes out to those who bear that burden on a daily basis. I wish our country was better at handling/treating/caring for mental illness. If anything good comes out of tragedies like Robin Williams' death, hopefully it is a continually increased awareness of the impact of depression/mental illness and that it is something that requires treatment, not just prayer or happy thoughts or being "tough enough" to "just get over it."

I think often times as Christians we are told (as I know from personal experience) that anything less than being happy all the time means that we're denying ourselves "the joy of the Lord" which is our strength, or we must have done something wrong and our "depression" is a manifestation of the sin in our hearts. This is such an incorrect and harmful view, but I know and have seen it hurt so many. I pray we can get better at dealing with this.

The symmetry between Fallon, Higgins, and the Roots is fantastic. Check out this clip from some weeks ago. I think it might be the best 8 minutes in Tonight Show history! http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/segments/5806

Here’s an interesting 30 minute George Noory interview with Dr. Peter Breggin where they talk about the problem of depression and suicide in relation to the recent death of Robin Williams.

My Dad's bday was 8/11(82 years) and my son's bday is today, 8/13(23 years).

We can adopt you. August will be happier for you.

I really like this guy. His personality and philosophy. He kind of reminds me of Jeff Daniels, the actor. Here's a 10.5 minute piece.
