  • I got a frantic phone call from WifeGeeding that she locked her keys in the SUV with our children inside.  A quick call to OnStar probably could have solved the problem, but I wanted to play hero so I drove to the rescue.  When I arrived I could see DaughterGeeding was a little panicked, so I quickly unlocked the vehicle with the spare remote, opened the door, and hugged her.  The first thing DaughterGeeding said to me was that she was going to see her grandmother today (which was true) and that she wanted mommy.
  • When I was about the same age I asked my dad for the car keys.  He gave them to me because he thought Mom was asking for them.  I climbed into our huge white Buick, locked the doors, and put the key in the ignition.  I wasn’t strong enough to start the car, but I was able to turn it to release the gear shift and then put the car in neutral.  The car rolled back and bounced from the curb and back up the driveway a few times and the next thing I knew all my family was running to the car in a panic while I remained calm and cool behind he steering wheel honking the horn a few times.  Eventually I unlocked the doors to my parent’s relief.

  • Baylor and A&M both snatched up the last two University of Houston head coaches, whoever is hiring coaches for Houston needs to me a GM in the NFL.
  • I caught the “60 Minutes” segment about college football and it gave me such mixed feelings about watching the sport.  At least when I watch the NFL I know that they aren’t trying to hide the fact that it’s a business.
  • I watched The Iron Lady over the weekend, it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.
  • I also watched Skyfall, it was much better than I thought it would be.  I’m really not that much of a James Bond fan, so I wish I could have appreciated all the inside hat-tips to the past Bond films, but I do think this was the best of the modern Bond films.  Speaking of Bond films, I’ve never caught a Sean Connery one, sad to say.

I rarely go to a theater, but I watched Skyfall this weekend. It was very good, not quite ready to label it the "Best Bond Ever", but it was very good and an excellent reboot to the series. It was loaded with hat tips and I'm sure I missed one or two, but couldn't help but grin when the DB5 (complete with ejector seat and all the Q goodies) hit the screen.

You've never seen a Sean Connery Bond? Dr. No and Thunderball are my favorites. Pure Bond swagger from start to finish.

Oddly enough, I watched Skyfall at a Cinemark theater and saw the commercial about using Cinemode. But I would have had to take my phone out and download the app which seemed counter to what they were trying to accomplish. I also had to sit in the Handicap row because the theater was full. Those handicapped sure have a sweet deal, plenty of leg room and nobody sitting next to you.

I saw both Skyfall and Lincoln this weekend. Both were great movies, though obviously for different reasons.

I agree that Skyfall was exceptional. I've seen a majority of the Bond films, and this one was easily top 5 in my opinion. Great movie with great nods to the storied past of the franchise. I have to echo RPM in recommending Dr. No and Thunderball, as well as Goldfinger. Watch those three and you'll see the majority of the Bond "cliches" that are spoofed/parodied/referenced throughout pop culture.

Lincoln was masterful. I worry that it won't be as well received as it should be because of its slow, deliberate pacing, but it was a wonderful movie. It was powerful, moving, and an excellent reminder not only of how much things have changed, but also how much things haven't changed. I hear the echos of the arguments made in Lincoln in some of today's political arguments. This is a must-see movie.

When we went to see Lincoln yesterday, there was a large (10-12) group of elderly individuals from a nearby assisted-living center. I was really happy that they had the opportunity to go see the movie. And it was comical/endearing when one of the residents loudly asked "Is that Lincoln?" the first time Daniel Day-Lewis appeared on screen. The next 2-3 times she asked, it wasn't so much funny as it was annoying. But by the time she had asked another 4-5 times, it was just sad.

As a side note, the theater was packed, which made me wonder why the staff didn't bring them to see the movie at an 11 a.m. showing on a weekday? It just seems like that would have been easier on both the residents and the staff, but what do I know?

Also, I already had the Cinemark app, and tried to use CineMode, but it interfered with using the RunPee app. And when you're watching movies that clock in at over 140 minutes, let's be honest – that's a pretty handy app…
