Bag of Randomness

  • Sometimes it pays to ride your bike when it’s dark outside yelling at the top of your lungs.  I did that last night trying to find OtherDogGeeding who somehow escaped after the sun set.  Thankfully a man came out of his house and informed me that one of his friends up the road picked up our little buddy, and if it wasn’t for my yelling, he never would have come outside.
  • OtherDogGeeding has one of those chips on him that when scanned, provides the owners contact information.  Unfortunately, that was the one phone number we didn’t update, so it took us longer than it should have to get our little buddy back home.
  • Trying to find a lost dog is emotionally draining.  And in a very hilly neighborhood, is pretty physically draining on a bicycle.
  • Because of the dog hunting, I didn’t get to watch the VP debate live and follow it on Twitter.
  • I bet both Biden and Ryan love their country and the Catholic church as much as the other.
  • Perhaps Martha Raddatz should have written a book on moderating presidential debates.  She should probably clear her calendar for October 2016 for a future debate.  But then again, having both candidate sitting down and everyone within a few feet of each other changes things quite a bit.  In that Jim Lehrer book that I just wrapped up, that concept was all Dick Cheney’s idea.
  • Speaking of Cheney, I’m once again reminded of the similarities of this election and the 2004 election.  In the first presidential debate, Pres GW Bush had a very poor outing (though not as bad a Obama’s) and it was Cheney’s job to stop the bleeding.
  • Overall, I thought the debate was a great exchange, well moderated, and pretty much a tie, with a slight edge going to Biden.
  • An upclose pic of some of Biden’s notes
  • A photo of Pres Obama watching the debate on Air Force One.
  • Fact checking last night’s debate
  • This article mentions that Gov Romney met with Billy Graham, and Graham stated he would do what ever he could to support Romney, and that he could be quoted on that.  I’m not buying it.  I’ve admired and followed Billy Graham for quite a while, and in his later years he’s stated his regrets in getting into politics and endorsements.  This is nothing more than Franklin Graham using his father as a prop, and it’s not the first time he’s done it.
  • The ABC News political coverage would be much better without Donna Brazil and Nicole Wallace.
  • I couldn’t find a picture of it, but right after the debate, one of Ryan’s sons sat in his father’s debate chair and was just chillin’.  It was pretty darn cute.
  • A sad, sad news item that will probably be overlooked because of the VP debate – North Dakota freshman makes apology, shoots self in front of class
  • A hot tub stationary bike combination
  • Frank Caliendo use to do impressions for the Fox NFL pregame show (wayyy too much Madden if you ask me), now he’s going to be doing them for ESPN.
  • I love me some Texas/OU weekend.  I was told the best time to do anything at the fair was during the game, and that’s when one of my non-football loving friends go.  Yes, I can have friends that don’t love football.

Let me try and understand this: Steve Holland of the Reuters News Service writes a story in the Chicago Tribune, complete with pictures of Billy Graham and Romney, and you don't believe it?

What else could the writer have done for you to "buy it"? No offense Geeding, but could it be you aren't buying it because you happen to support the other candidate? Buy it.

    • Geeding says:

      Hey LewP –

Of course I'm supporting the other candidate, but I don't think that's clouding my judgement on this issue and it doesn't mean I can't question the authenticity of this story. I raised an eyebrow at this sentence towards the end of the article "A campaign official said among the topics discussed . . .. " It makes me think the article is only reporting things based on what the Romney campaign released, not what Steve Holland actually heard or witnessed. But I will admit, I could be wrong.

As I mentioned, I've been a fan of Billy for a long time, and for him to endorse a candidate doesn't follow his typical behavior, hence my questioning. For instance, this article from the last election states "But Graham, as he had in most elections, did not formally endorse any candidate." http://www.patheos.com/blogs/getreligion/2010/04/

And then there's this old article which states, ""Graham said Wednesday he never has publicly endorsed a candidate and he takes a stand familiar to Pope John Paul II on the issue. "The clergy out to stay out of politics and let the laymen handle it,"" http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=860&dat

Perhaps I'm making too much out of this quote "I'll do all I can to help you. And you can quote me on that." Maybe that's not a formal endorsement, but just a way of Graham being friendly.

So regarding what I said, I don't think I'm shooting from the hip, I have some context to back it up. But I'll also leave room to admit I could be wrong, but for now, I'm questioning it.

      • LewP says:

I certainly don't mind someone questioning a story, but the sentence "Before the meeting ended, Graham led a prayer for Romney and said: "I'll do all I can to help you. And you can quote me on that.", that's about as direct as you can be if you are a reporter, writer. It's a direct quote.
At some point then, you either have to accept the quote as factual, or assume the writer is lying. Only two possibilities here. As in Christianity, you either have to accept the word, or not. It's your choice sir.

        • Geeding says:

I'm not stating that the reporter is lying, but what I'm not sure about is if the reporter is getting all his information from the Romney campaign officials or if he actually heard Graham say those words. The reason I'm not sure if he heard Graham directly say those words is because of this sentence " "A campaign official said among the topics discussed . . .. " That sentence is making me question if the reporting is from direct observation or through statements from the campaign. Right now I'm thinking there was just a photo opp, people left, and the reporter is going off what the campaign provided. Per Graham's past behavior and statements, it doesn't sound like something he would say. But as I've said, Graham may have had a change of heart about how he goes about things.

You couldn't melt me down and pour me into Fair Park on Texas/OU Weekend. Made the mistake of doing that once…. ONCE! Yeah the crowd is kinda thin during the game, but before and after was a complete nightmare.
