Is her kind sorely missed, or out of touch?

Former First Lady Barbara Bush speaking at SMU:

“It’s been, I think, the worst campaign I’ve ever seen in my life; I hate it,” the elder Bush said. “I hate the fact that people think ‘compromise’ is a dirty word.”

I agree with the former first lady, particularly regarding the vitriol of the current climate and the distaste for compromise, but I also think some of the blame can be placed squarely at her husband's feet, with the Willie Horton ad, the demonization of the ACLU, and the coining of the word liberal as a pejorative.

Not a fan of Mrs Bush the elder, but I do have some respect. That said, I wonder how she feels about her oldest son being a willing participant and instigator of the current type of campaigning (i.e. vitriol).
