Perhaps Robert E. Lee's reason for deciding to fight for the south was because he knew that the Union was overstepping its constitutional authority in forcing a state to remain in the Union once the federal government had overreached its authority. While Lincoln may have held the Union together, he began this growth of the Federal government that has become a behemouth that is now probably unstoppable to the point that it will eventually control every aspect of our lives.
