Bag of Randomness

  • I’ll be in Austin for almost all of next week so I thought I would take in a Longhorn men’s basketball game.  Too bad they’ll be playing at UCLA.
  • As a kid it was a bit of a tradition for the tree to stay up at least through New Year’s Day.  Now, I can’t wait to take it down and get things back to ‘normal’.
  • It will be great the day the kids will be able to pull the tree down from the attic on their own and put it up all by themselves.  But I don’t want to rush things.
  • I get nervous stepping on the wooden attic ladder steps.  I’m always sure to step on the outer edges for greater support, but I still fear it breaking . . . and then me breaking.
  • Newt in 2008 on the Individual Mandate
  • I watched the Kennedy Center Honors last night and then checked out the Neil Diamond Wikipedia page.  I didn’t know he attended NYU on a fencing scholarship, was a member of the NCAA men’s championship team, and sometimes fenced to warm up before concerts.
  • The Neil Diamond tribute performance ended with a stage of Red Sox fans singing “Sweet Caroline,” which I thought was a sweet touch.
  • I’m getting old, I forgot that event was hosted by Walter Cronkite from 1978 until 2002.  Since that time, it’s been hosted by Caroline.
  • I’m on an Indiana Jones kick and checked out the first episode of the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.  In this first episode, he runs into Lawrence of Arabia.
  • I looked up the man that plays Ronald Reagan in the new Meryl Streep movie The Iron Lady, this appears to be his only acting gig.
  • I saw there is a big fund raiser for that blogging fashion model that walked into a plane propeller, and that kind of surprises me because it seems that she and her parents are well off.  I wonder if there would be so much concern if she wasn’t so attractive?
  • There are two big local murder/crime stories that have always peaked my interests.  One being Peggy Railey who what appears was put into a 25-year vegetative state by her husband who was lead pastor at First United Methodist Church Dallas who was having an affair.  The other is Darlie Routier who was sentence for murdering her kids, who sprayed silly string on their graves for a birthday celebration.
  • Twenty-five years in a vegetative state seems like torture, not just for the victim, but for the family that cares for her.
  • Too bad Jason Witten didn’t make the Pro Bowl, but I really thought Sean Lee should have made it. But I bet they end up making it, so many player pull out of it anyways.
  • I don’t think there’s a person in DFW that thinks the Cowboys will beat the Giants this weekend.
  • Another #firstworldproblem hit us yesterday – the package of toilet paper we bought for some reason doesn’t have perforated lines.

Still fun putting the tree up, but taking it down and pushing it up those those ladder steps: definitely not fun. Two years ago I super-down-sized my tree and it's still a bear to jam through the attic door

I can remember a few years ago when there was a TO controversy over Romo favoring and throwing too many passes to Witten. Now Romo rarely throws to him. I believe that the Cowboys offensive game plan is so vanilla most teams have figured it out. No surprise none of the offensive players made it to the Pro Bowl. I'm not worried that the Cowboys will lose Sunday; I'm more afraid that they will be completely embarassed.

Speaking of Indiana Jones and the Lawrence of Arabia" cameo", my favorite scene in the Lost Crusade [besides every scene with Elsa] was when he bumps into Hitler at a Nazi rally and Hitler autographs Jones' book.

My wife and I battle every year about the Christmas decorations. I would take them down every year on the 26th and she would rather wait until after New Years. Once she goes back to work, it's easy to procrastinate on putting them away and it seems like we never get them down until mid-January.

I wondered the same thing about the girl who walked into the plane propeller. I've also been curious as to why no questions have been asked about how the pilot allowed this to happen in the first place. I occasionally go flying with a friend of mine that owns a plane and no one ever exits or approaches the plane before the engine is shut down, even when we are just switching out passengers. A spinning propeller is difficult to see during the day and impossible to see after dark.
