Tonight with be the last night in which Conan O’Brien will be the host of The Tonight Show. A part of me wonders if it would be worth buying a mug or any other merchandise with the show’s name with O’Brien’s to see if it will become a collector’s item.
Leno doesn’t start hosting The Tonight Show until after the Olympics, and with Conan leaving tonight, NBC is going to be forced to run re-runs between now and the start of the Olympics. Instead of running re-runs of Leno or Conan, I think they should run old episodes of Johnny Carson and some of his classic shows. It would make for a nice transition, possibly boost ratings, revamp things, but I just don’t know if it can be legally done. For some reason I think I once heard that Carson held the rights to those shows.
Sarah Palin is coming to Texas to campaign for Gov. Good Hair. This should be interesting.
George H. W. Bush is endorsing Sen Kay Bailey Hutchinson. I wonder if George W. Bush will back either candidate; I bet he just stays on the sidelines.
Southwest Airlines, which was founded in 1971, announced yesterday that for the 37th straight year they made a profit, $99 million for 2009. That’s pretty darn impressive considering this economic environment and that they don’t charge for checked baggage (first two bags).
What else is impressive is their CEO/Director/Chairman of the Board/President Gary Kelly is only paid $1.68 million, which is his total compensation which includes salary, bonuses, and stock options. The Employees of Southwest Airlines are very fortunate to have a Leader like Gary Kelly.
Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision is going to make owning a DVR a must because come election time, all you will see is annoying political commercials.
Is Wade Phillips the only coach that Jerry has ever given a contract extension to?
Jack Paar preceded Carson, I guess they could run his very first shows, if they still exist. The problem with the old shows is that much of humor is topical and might not be that funny today. ESPN pointed out yesterday that in the last three years only three other coaches have better records than Wade: the Colts, Chargers and, I think, the Patriots. Wade has also won the division twice in three years. Interestingly, Buffalo and Oakland have been having problems getting candidates to even come in for coaching interviews. And yet, neither team approached Jason Garrett. If there is an owners' lock-out in 2011, Wade is only getting a one year extension. NBC last night said the "bags fly free" program is one reason passengers pick Southwest. I guess that's why Delta raised the amount they charge for bags. It will be interesting to see how much they report in losses.
In case you're curious, here's a blog posting I found from one of Conan's former staffers, who posted photos of the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brin studio and offices as they looked just this past Friday, Feb 5. Pretty sad, really…
