Bag of Randomness

  • The last time I really remember being shocked by a Cowboys win was when they traveled to St Louis and beat the Rams in their good years.
  • This win was almost like payback for when the Saints marched into Texas Stadium and embarrassed a Bill Parcells coached team a few years back.
  • It’s a good thing they didn’t take my advice about focusing on the running game.
  • Is Martellus Bennett the most over-hyped Cowboy?  He hasn’t really wowed us at all this season yet has his own radio show; and he’s the backup, and his backup, John Phillips, caught some clutch passes – three catches for 40 yards actually.
  • What to do about our kicker Nick Folk?  It’s clear he doesn’t need to be kicking for us, he’s 18 of 28 – ten misses on any other team and he would be out of a job.  But after such a win, if he’s cut, I wonder what that does to this fragile mental state of the team, especially on the week of Christmas?  And did you see the clips that the NFL Network provided of Folk warming up before the game?  It looked like my dog was kicking for the Cowboys.
  • Tony Romo has not turned the ball over in December.
  • The Cowboys are too hot and cold for me to become a believer in this team.  But it’s still fun rooting for them.
  • The Cowboys were nothing but a punchline up until kickoff on Saturday, then in three and a half hours later they become a legitimate playoff contender.
  • WifeGeeding thinks Miles Austin is acting cocky and is afraid he may be on performing enhancing drugs.  But then again, she was the same person who show up to church wearing two different shoes.
  • I watched the game with one of my closest friends.  I think it was the first time I watched a game with him in a few years, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
  • My pastor said something on Sunday that just stuck with me, “Through no effort on our own, we were born in the United States, and what a blessing.”
  • Speaking of being born and blessings, WifeGeeding always wanted to be a mother.  I’m glad I could help make that happen.  I guess, in a way, that’s my present to her this year.
  • In my evangelical circle of friends it’s amazing how many people know Pastor Matt Chandler, the classmate/friend of mine that I mentioned who recently discovered he has a brain tumor.  The guy is a really talented speaker, and his name pops up in conversation all the time about his ministry.  However, when I mention him in my Sunday school class not one person had heard of him.
  • Our Sunday school lesson was over the Church of England.  I really liked the lesson, it’s something I not real familiar with but feel like it’s something I should know more about.  Heck, it’s not very often you names like Pope Gregory.
  • From an adult learning perspective, I really like how the instructor started the lesson, by asking us to imagine a Church of America and telling us what it would be like – you know, comparing this imaginary church to the Church of England and all.
  • He also said something that stuck with me.  He stated if you really wanted to annoy a member of the Church of England, tell them that their church all started because King Henry VIII just wanted to get a divorce, and then he went on to say it’s a bad thing to over generalize, and I thought he couldn’t be more right.  As a society we tend to do this all the time with all sorts of things that really only heat up the debate, in particular with religion, politics, and saying how people of a certain reason are this and that.  It seems like we are far too quick to come to choosing a way of thought of a particular issue without really understanding it.  I guess that’s part of our gotta have it now society – fast or instant meals, the ability to download music right away, Dummy books and Cliff Notes, sum this up for me in 142 characters or less, etc.
  • Maybe a better way to make that point, and I know we are all guilty of it one way or another, but we tend to say things like “Catholics believe this” and “The French are . . .”
  • One benefits of attending a smaller more intimate church is that next to the church office, families have their pictures with their names hanging on the wall.  For a guy like me that is horrible with remember names, it’s quite a benefit to use that as a reference when I can’t recall a person’s name.
  • There’s a commercial on Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket that keeps playing about some kind of event in January regarding guns.  It starts off by talking about how we in Texas value hunting and shooting just like our fathers have taught us, and then it goes on about how the “folks in Washington” wants to take your guns and ammo away.
  • SisterGeeding is flying in from NYC tonight, I’m looking forward to some brother-sister bonding time.
  • One conversation I had with my friend Jimi before the game was about our current stage in adulthood, how we are able to process events, situations, and all sorts of other things much differently that we could right out of college because he now how a genuine perspective on things.  Movies are more emotional because we’ve experienced what it is like to lose a loved one, and we are more patient with people who may just be in training on a new job.  The whole conversation gave me a better understanding of “Forgive them Father, for they do not know what they do,” if that makes any sense.
  • I have a feeling that whole Google Holiday card thing didn’t work out so well.  It’s weird I haven’t received any cards.  I checked the links I have posted and my mailing address displays correctly.
  • Speaking of Christmas cards, and this one really deserves its own post, but I got another one in the mail from Tammy and her family from New York.  WifeGeeding really liked the card since it’s a scene from her favorite Christmas movie, A Christmas Story.  Tammy was nice enough to address the card to me, WifeGeeding, FetusGeeding, and both DogGeeding and OtherDogGeeding.  Not only that, but she hooked us up with coupons for everyone.  There were coupons for dog treats, kids toys, ice cream, lotion, and fruit – a little something from everyone!
  • Food preferences by political affiliation
  • What English sounds like to foreigners?
  • Random Obama fist bump
  • I’m officially putting this Belkin Bluetooth music receiver on my wishlist.
  • If you have a good idea that will benefit others, Pepsi will pay you for it.
  • A whale gives birth – the part of the video that stands out to me is the mother pushing her newborn to the surface to get air – as if the little one isn’t strong enough to swim up to do it or just doesn’t know that’s what to do.
  • Have you noticed that Survivor no longer gives away a vehicle?  And this season I don’t recall seeing any family members making a surprise visit.
  • I bet when the Survivor contestants have to do that silly “walk down memory torch lane” thing they have to be reminded who a lot of the losers were.
  • I was not happy with the outcome of the show, but that’s part of the reason why I like to watch it.  I love a fierce competitor.
  • Since there are nine members in the jury, and there are three people that can get votes, I wonder what would happen with a three way tie.  It doesn’t seem fair, in my opinion, to use past votes or other past criteria to decide the overall winner.  I know they build a fire when there are ties, but I don’t think that would apply in a million dollar vote.  Wikipedia provides some interesting details about a mysterious white envelope.
  • Not sure how often I will post this week or next.

okay…so the whole google card thing…i was going to send you one of those too, but when i got there (shortly after you announced it), they were all gone…so yeah, i don't think they were available to send to you.

There were rumors that the Cowboys were trying to trade Bennett during mid-season.

I think the players want to see Folk gone. He’s just too messed up mentally. How would the players feel if they lost one of the next two games because of a botched field goal? Folk’s problems alter the Cowboy’s strategy as they approach the goal line.

I thought it was interesting that Romo said the team used comments made by Tony Dungy last week (i.e. that the Cowboys had no chance of beating the Saints) to motivate themselves during the week.

I had a problem with the on-line card so I ended up going the USPS route

I was very upset with the survivor outcome. I wish one season they would have no jury, just winner takes all, maybe add a few more competitions.

I sent a google card as well the day you posted the link. Too bad it didn't work! I have no doubt it would have been the best card you would have received 🙂 It's a shame you won't see it. 😛 Merry Christmas Geeding Family!
