District’s error delays summer break by 34 school days for some students

47513850

School’s out for summer — except for hundreds of children in western San Bernardino County who, because of an administrative snafu, must make up 34 days of school this summer.

The fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders at Rolling Ridge Elementary in Chino Hills and Dickson Elementary in Chino exceeded the state’s requirement of minutes spent in the classroom, and the last day of school was supposed to be Thursday. But because of the complexities of state law and a clerical error on a spreadsheet, the Chino Unified School District will lose more than $7 million in state funds if classes end at the schools before July 31.

Congresswoman Bachmann rebels, refuses to fill out next year’s census

Outspoken Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann says she’s so worried that information from next year’s national census will be abused that she will not fill out anything more than the number of people in her household.

In an interview Wednesday with The Washington Times’ “America’s Morning News,” the Minnesota Republican said the questions have become “very intricate, very personal” and that she feared ACORN, the community organizing group that came under fire for its voter registration efforts last year, would be part of the U.S. Census Bureau’s door-to-door information collection efforts.

  • A nice way to break in the new intern.  Link
  • American Idol auditions are next week at the new Cowboys Stadium . . . I’m sure Fox4 will kill us with coverage.
  • Psycho?
  • For some reason I was researching Keiko, that killer whale in the Free Willy movies.  For some other reason, I wanted to know what happened to his body after he died.  Turns out he was buried on a beach at night, not far from where he beached himself, and later school children covered his grave with rocks.  Here’s a picture of his grave in Norway.  Tranquil.
  • The GOP is having trouble communication with new media
  • Everytime I hear about the city of Galveston I get a creepy feeling, mainly because I think of the hurricane that hit it in 1900 and how the dead were first disposed.  Casualties were so numerous they decided to dump them at sea, unfortunately many washed ashored for several weeks.
  • That same hurricane made it all the way up to NYC with 65 mph winds.
  • When I was in elementary school, I always preferred having a cardboard crayon box, the ones similar to a cigar box, as opposed to the plastic ones.
  • Didn’t I see this in a cartoon or movie?
