A bird used her body as a dam to stop overflowing drainpipe water from soaking her chicks.
The Mistle Thrush had built her nest on top of a downpipe, blocking the water’s passage and causing the gutter to flood.
But desperate to protect her young, she puffed herself up to twice her size and sat in the drainpipe to stop the tide of rain water swamping the nest.
She was so occupied with her task that her mate was left to feed her and their young.
The images were captured by amateur wildlife photographer Dennis Bright at a house in Fareham, Hampshire.

Oregon’s House members have passed a measure that would allow Oregon workers to freely practice their religious beliefs in the workplace.
Senate Bill 786 requires employers to accommodate religious beliefs provided they don’t impose an “undue hardship” on the business. The bill now goes to Gov. Ted Kulongoski for his signature.

I found #2 interesting:
Stations earn on average between 10 and 15 cents on a gallon of gas. Ironically, they earn the least when prices are highest. When fuel climbs, gas stations must shrink their profit margin to remain competitive, meaning they earn less per gallon than usual. But another big cost during tough times is something they can’t do anything about—credit card fees, which add up to about 2.5 percent of all purchases. When gas is at, say, $2 a gallon, the station pays credit card companies 5 cents a gallon; when gas hits $3, that fee becomes 7.5 cents—more than half the station’s entire average profit.

PORT HURON, Mich. — Squirrel. Thief. Patriot.
A brazen squirrel has been grabbing small American flags placed in a Port Huron, Mich., cemetery and carrying them up to its nest, which now looks as if it’s bedecked in bunting.
Every Memorial Day, volunteers place the flags next to the graves of nearly 1,000 veterans buried at Mount Hope Cemetery about 55 miles northeast of Detroit. The flags were undisturbed during a Mass held Monday.
The Times Herald reports that workers at the cemetery on Tuesday noticed several flags had been torn off their wooden staffs, which were still in the ground.
The mystery was solved in front of superintendent Ron Ceglarek’s eyes. He watched a squirrel detach a flag stapled to a staff and carry it up a tree to the nest.
So what’s the proper punishment? No nuts for a week?

A funny mid-20th century newsreel featuring amazingly accurate predictions of the year 2000.
There is one part that is slightly PG-13ish.

Example, I personally answer all my own emails instead of having the staff do it. They think I’m nuts but I love the personal touch when I work with a company so I figured we should do it too.
