While the screaming headline was the most famous error of this issue, it wasn’t the only mistake. Calling further attention to the strike and a lack of typesetting experience, the replacement staff used a typewriter for news on the front page and portions of a few others. For the sake of time, typos were corrected by “X”ing over them with the typewriter. And, perhaps most embarrassingly, five lines of election coverage in the far-right column were typed upside down!

I read two article this morning over spanking children and learned the following:
- It’s is also called corporal punishment. When I think of corporal punishment, the first thing that comes to mind isn’t spanking, but prison.
- Boys get spanked more than girls
- Minorities and special education students are most likely to get spanked.
- Texas and Mississippi leads the nation in spanking. (Somewhat related thought: Mississippi is one fun state to spell.)
- Dallas has banned spanking.
- Spanking is banned in 29 states.
- More than 100 countries and all of Europe has banned spanking in schools.
Article 1 and Article 2
Thoughts/Observations on spanking:
- I was spanked on my very first day of kindergarten by my teacher. I actually repeated that grade with the same teacher, and I think I started when I was a little under five years of age, but I’m not sure.   Oddly enough, I have nothing but good memories of that teacher. The irony is that I’m now married to a kindergarten teacher.
- Whent the lunchroom got too loud, the principal at our elementary school use to walk around with a paddle, he later became president of Weatherford College.
- I remember coaches use to use a paddle that had holes drilled in it so it would move through the air faster. I don’t recall that paddle ever being used, I think it was just for intimidation.
- During premarital counseling my pastor (and father of one of my very close friends) gave us an example of when couples may not have the same ideas when it comes to raising (or is it rearing?) a child. His son (my friend) and his wife had a child. The child did something wrong, and his father spanked him. His wife was never spanked and was very against the issue and promptly told her husband he was abusing her child.

Oprah wants you to do the following: read TS Eliot, awaken your life’s purpose and buy a pair of white jeans. So far Robyn Okrant has only completed one of the three and time is running out. For Okrant, this is the year of living Oprah. Since the start of January, whatever Oprah says, eats or espouses, Robyn has followed, and blogged on. She’s not a bored housewife or a superfan, but a sceptical Chicago actor who wonders if Oprah really knows best.
“I am not attempting to prove Oprah wrong or right but I am trying to encourage women, highly susceptible to the media’s influence, to question the sources,” says Okrant, who posts her thoughts at livingoprah.com.

After some debate on the authenticity of Dolores Aguilar’s obit in the Vallejo Times-Herald, which if you recall was shockingly brutal, we got to the bottom of it all.
Turns out Aguilar’s obit is real – mighty real, according to an anonymous editorial spokesperson at VHT. In order to publish the damning obit, the editor staff did something unprecedented. “We demanded to see Aguilar’s death certificate brought in by a blood relative” before going ahead with the obit, our source tells us.

MEXICO CITY – A Catholic priest’s condemnation of miniskirts on an official church Web site is causing outrage among some Mexican women, who say the Roman Catholic Church is making it easier to justify sexual violence against women.
The Rev. Sergio G. Roman sounded the alarm against miniskirts in an online publication to prepare Catholics for a church family-values forum next year in Mexico City.
“When we show our body without prudence, without modesty, we are prostituting ourselves,” wrote Roman, a Mexico City priest.
Mexican newspaper columnists lampooned the article, and women’s rights advocates have assailed it.
Women dressed in miniskirts and low-cut shirts have rallied at the doors of Mexico City’s Cathedral during Sunday Mass, carrying signs that read: “Clothed and naked, I am the same.”

- On Monday morning during my commute I heard the morning radio DJ’s announce that Reunion Arena was going to be torn down, and then the DJ’s discussed how cool it would be if the City of Dallas were to sell the seats of the complex. On Tuesday I heard them announce that the seats were going to be sold and all of them said they weren’t going to be interested because the lack of champion success at the arena, with the exception of the Stars of course; and this was two different stations that I listened to.
- Every workday I drive past the President George Bush Turnpike (SH I90) and the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway (Interstate 635). I always wondered why the turnpike needs the word “President” before it, seems like overkill. Makes me wonder if and when a W highway will be build. I would expect it to be around the new mix master around DFW Airport.
- I so wish I could take my dog to work.
- My first dog was named Skippy after the Skipper on Gilligan’s Island.
- I was amazed that 25 world swimming records were broke at this Olympics, but wasn’t aware that 30 world swimming records were broke at the Montreal Games back in 1976 – which would be the first occurance of an Olympics of my life. Why were so many records broken back in ‘76? It was the first time goggles were used. Source
- Thirty-six year old Christina Applegate had a double mastectomy. For men my age that grew up with her, that news is unsettling for a number of reasons. I’m sure it’s quite terrifying for many women as well.
- Twitter wasn’t for me, but it turns out that John Cleese is using it. Link
- I hear a reason why most athletes that compete in Olympic type of events don’t try to shatter a record is because of their endorsement contracts that state they get a bonus each time they break a record. For instance, lets take a look at Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva, she has broken the pole vault record 24 times (14 outdoor, 10 indoor). If she wanted to, she could have shattered the previous record and only get one bonus; however, instead of setting a record she can no longer beat, she was able to get 24 separate bonuses from her sponsors.
- Unfortunately Lolo Jones didn’t medal, but her webpage’s music cracked me up.
- Cris Collinsworth is growing on me.
- Hey Jimi – I saw the sign.
- I go to bed around 9:30 PM every night but I usually don’t fall asleep until 11:30 PM.
- I graduated with two friends in high school that never missed a single day of school.
- The Cowboys are holding their first open practice in 15 years at Texas Stadium. I’m very tempted to check it out, but I’m not much for crowds or traffic.
- That last sentence makes me sound like a fuddy dud.
- It just hit me, but someone close to me reminds me of Eeyor.
- I had a friend in high school that looked like Sebastian the crab from The Little Mermaid when he smiled – he was very proud of that.
- Nightline just stated that “Jessie’s Girl” is the number one requested karaoke song.
- I carry Chapstick with me 99% of the time.
- I wonder what Bob Barker has been up to.
- I was recently asked what place in the world would I want to visit the most and I had no answer.
- Two of my biggest joys involve football. Playing catch and playing Madden with a good friend.
- I haven’t watched MTV since Newlyweds was on.
- I have never watched an episode of 90210.
